Job Description

The Department of Periodontology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry invites applications for a full-time position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to serve as Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology. The UAB School of Dentistry is a leading oral health education and research institution with a focus on clinical and scholarly excellence. We seek an energetic team player who can advance the mission of the department in didactic and clinical teaching, research, service, and patient care.

The Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology will be responsible for oversight of the advanced education program in periodontology, including resident selection, onboarding, didactic and clinical education, delivery of patient care and vertical and horizontal integration of care within the interdisciplinary structure for the UAB School of Dentistry, integration with external educational stakeholders, and development of resident scholarly activity. The Director of Advanced Education will provide departmental representation on school and university committees and will contribute to overall curricular development and review of patient care within the UAB School of Dentistry and at the University Level.

The Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology reports directly to the Chair and is an integral part of the departmental leadership team. The Director of Advanced Education's administrative duties include continuous assessment and improvement of the advanced education program in periodontology and oversight of the preparation for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accreditation process. The Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology will help plan, implement, and responsibly manage clinical operations, including sound fiscal practices. The Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology will review teaching faculty within the Advanced Education Program on an annual basis and provide summative assessments and development. S/he will also review residents within the program on a biannual basis in addition to providing regular formative feedback.

Required Qualifications

Qualified applicants must have a DDS/DMD or equivalent degree and must have completed a CODA accredited Advanced Education Program in Periodontology with experience in the field. Qualified applicants must be board eligible or board certified in Periodontology. Applicants must be eligible for licensure and/or a special teaching permit in Alabama.

Board certified or Board eligible with the American Board of Periodontology
