Job Description

Great Basin College (GBC) seeks a Science Laboratory Coordinator to join our small, yet dynamic interdisciplinary Science Department. The laboratory coordinator and instructor, in concert with the Science Department faculty manages all laboratories throughout GBC. This position will be located at the Elko Campus with some travel required to other campus locations (Winnemucca, Ely, and Pahrump) for lab oversight and assistance.

The lab coordinator oversight activities will include: maintaining lab environments in a clean, safe and orderly manner; maintenance of service records for equipment and appliances; order lab materials in a timely manner; maintenance of living organisms to include live microbiology cultures using aseptic techniques (this may include weekend hours upon occasion); assist in maintaining laboratory budgets and other duties as assigned. In consultation with the Science faculty this person will manage, prepare and set up laboratory exercise. Planning of lab exercise schedules with faculty is a key aspect of the position's responsibilities. Instructional activities may include substituting for full-time faculty or working as a part-time instructor in area of expertise.

The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for a diverse array of tasks. The management of the laboratory and instructional aspects as described above are equally important roles, requiring the need for this person to be able to act independently and be able to prioritize items as needed.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree or a Bachelor of Arts Degree in a science field is required.
  • Previous experience with a wide array of laboratory techniques, including chemical and microbiological, is preferred.
  • Previous experience in lab management is preferred.
  • Familiarity with and the ability to use standard PC tools and software is required, including but not limited to use of word processing, spreadsheets, email and the internet.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of lab spaces in a clean, safe and orderly manner.
  • Ordering of supplies needed for laboratory exercises in a timely manner.
  • In consultation with other Science faculty, manage, prepare, set up and take down laboratory exercises.
  • On a semester basis, keep copies of laboratory syllabi to assist planning.
  • Maintain appropriate records of ordered supplies, and consult with the Departmental Administrative Assistant and Department Chair on budgetary needs and issues.
  • Manage MSDS sheets, chemical storage and chemical safety in consultation with both Science Faculty and the Director of Environmental Health, Safety, and Security.
  • Maintain living organisms as required for labs, including plants, animals, protists and bacteria.
  • Perform routine, regular maintenance and adjustment of lab equipment, or schedule technical assistance. Maintain service records for equipment and appliances.
  • Supervise work study students who will assist with basic lab preparation and maintenance activities.
  • In consultation with Science Department Chair, the Lab Coordinator may be assigned to teach entire lab sections, or substitute for regular Science faculty in individual lab exercises as needed. Overload salary will be provided when the Lab Coordinator is assigned responsibility for teaching a laboratory section.
  • When requested by faculty, and in consultation with Science Department Chair, the Laboratory Manager & Instructor may create and/or administrate lab quizzes and exams.
  • Provide an accessible contact for students as needed. When requested by faculty, assist with student projects as needed.
  • Be proactive in the design and implementation of new lab exercises. The Lab Coordinator is expected to keep current with new texts, modalities, and techniques in lab instruction, while conveying this information to faculty is an expectation of this position. - Assist with research projects as needed.

Travel

The position does require travel to other campus locations and throughout the service area, which could include occasional overnight stays with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act. Travel is part of supporting students and programs across the region. A strong commitment to serving rural communities is essential.

Compensation Grade

Administrative Faculty - Grade B (working 9-month academic schedule). The budgeted salary range for this position is $44,756 - $56,000, plus additional compensation for 20 additional days that are worked outside of the standard academic year. Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.
