Position SummaryThe Portland Metro STEM Partnership (PMSP) is an Oregon STEM hub serving the region covered by the Banks School District, Beaverton School District, Hillsboro School District, Forest Grove School District, and Portland Public Schools. PMSP operates as a department of the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University. PMSP’s mission is to support engaging and empowering STEM education for students in the Portland Metro region, with a special focus on students who have been positioned furthest from opportunity in STEM. PMSP has observed that out-of-school environments provide some of the richest opportunities for students to engage in STEM learning and grow their identities as people who are interested in and can do STEM. For that reason, PMSP has dedicated a staff position to support out-of-school educational programs to provide engaging and high quality STEM opportunities for youth.
The Community STEAM Education Coordinator will work specifically to support STEM education in out-of-school environments. Some of the responsibilities associated with this position include building partnerships with local community-based organizations who provide out-of-school programming to youth in the region. This group of out-of-school providers, along with other stakeholders like University and Community College, government, and industry partners, is also known as the Collaboratory. The Coordinator will convene the Collaboratory regularly, and create opportunities for networking and collaboration among members. The Coordinator will also manage all aspects of PMSP professional development workshops for out-of-school educators from research and development of topics to advertising and facilitation. Overview of duties The Community STEAM Education Coordinator will manage communications and build relationships within and among current and prospective Collaboratory members. They will assist in connecting people across organizations and sectors through the convening of bimonthly Collaboratory meetings to be held virtually or in-person. Additional duties may include conducting one-on-one meetings with community partners, and connecting Collaboratory members with PMSP, PSU, and other relevant resources.
The Community STEAM Coordinator will also manage the STEM Beyond School and STEM Equity Ally workshop series. This includes soliciting partner feedback and planning the professional development arc for the year, identifying and working with workshop facilitators, developing and facilitating workshops, managing registration and stipend payment systems, securing locations, marketing workshop opportunities to out-of-school educators in the region, and working on budgeting with the Program Director.
The Community STEAM Coordinator will support Career Connected Learning opportunities for out-of-school educators by developing and implementing a plan to strengthen connections between out-of-school educational programs and career pathways. This work could include connecting with industry professionals, developing an understanding of local industries and Career Connected Learning opportunities, supporting National Engineers Week, and attending career pathway summits in Oregon.
Other duties include attending PMSP team meetings and office days twice a week at PSU, supporting PMSP events such as STEMPosium and Partner Meetings, and using digital tools such as Google Drive and Canva to create and share resources.
- Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree with 3+ years of experience working in nonformal STEM educational environments (ex: after school program, summer camp).
- Experience developing and leading STEM out-of-school programs.
- Experience collaborating with community partners.
- Experience working with racially, ethnically and socioeconomically diverse communities.
- Preferred QualificationsMasters degree with 4+ years of experience working in nonformal educational environments (ex: after school program, summer camp).
- 1+ years of experience directing an afterschool or other nonformal educational program.
- Experience collaborating with culturally specific community partners. Knowledge of current best practices and trends in STEM education.

PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.
The starting annual salary for this position will be between $54,684 and $61,152 at 1.0 FTE ($32810.40 and $36691.20 at .60 FTE) but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
