Job Summary:

This position will contribute to collaborative projects studying tumor immunology, Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) pathogenesis, and the development of immune‑resistant cells for pancreatic islet transplantation. The successful candidate will work closely with other scientists and trainees to design and execute well‑controlled experiments, analyze and interpret data, and support the overall research mission of the laboratory. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to experimental rigor, effective communication and organizational abilities, and enthusiasm for mentoring undergraduate students in a collaborative research environment.

  • This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.
  • This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding

Department:

The mission of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology is to provide comprehensive scientific instruction to students, conduct novel and meaningful research, and offer consultation and service in microbiology and immunology as they relate to human health and disease.

Compensation:

The starting salary for this position is $54,000; but is negotiable based on experiences and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 6 years of post-baccalaureate hands‑on laboratory research experience
  • Extensive experience isolating, culturing, and analyzing primary human immune cells, including T cells and/or NK cells (monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells preferred)
  • Experience working with murine tumor models and conducting in vivo studies
  • Demonstrated experience managing mouse colonies, including breeding and husbandry
  • Experience with general laboratory management and daily laboratory operations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience isolating and culturing primary human tumor cells or tumor‑infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), including working with tumor spheroid or organoid cultures
  • Experience supporting in vitro assays to evaluate anti‑tumor immune responses and familiarity with xenograft mouse models involving human tumor or immune cells
  • Experience with histology, fluorescence microscopy, and/or live‑cell imaging platforms (e.g., IncuCyte)
  • Experience performing molecular and genomic analyses such as real‑time PCR (qPCR), RNA‑seq, ATAC‑seq, or ChIP‑seq
  • Experience with protein analysis techniques, including immunoprecipitation and Western blotting

Education:

Ph.D. in a relevant area of Biological Sciences or Biochemistry. Focus on immunology, cancer biology, or hematology preferred
