The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Department of Public Safety is currently recruiting for Security Officers (Security Guard) for Day and Evening Shifts. Under direct supervision, performs security activities to protect and safeguard students, faculty, and staff as well as visitors. The University buildings and other property should also be protected during normal campus operations and special events. The selected incumbent in this position will ensure the safety of the University community in compliance with Departmental Policies and Procedures.

New hires will be eligible for a $1,000 Sign-on Bonus. Half will be paid within the first 30 days of employment, and half will be paid upon successful completion of probation. Current UMB employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.

Primary Duties:

1. Secures and monitors access control at all entrances and exits to buildings and property.
2. Patrols buildings and grounds and notifies appropriate personnel when problems and life safety threats arise.
3. Completes logs and reports as instructed.
4. Assists with traffic control, crowd control, and parking enforcement.
5. Responds to routine inquiries from staff, students, and visitors.
6. Maintains communication with appropriate personnel utilizing equipment such as two-way radios and telephones.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Experience: None.

Preferred Experience: Prior security experience preferred. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license strongly preferred.

Other: Clery act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to follow oral and written instructions; to complete basic reports; to detect situations imperiling life, safety, and property; to perform extensive sitting, standing, and walking; to communicate effectively; to operate two-way radios and telephones.

Conditions of Employment: Applicants must submit to and successfully pass a thorough background investigation. Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license may be required. Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).

Hiring Range: $40,315 - $44,878.05 (pre-probation), commensurate with education and experience.

Note: New hires will receive a 2.5% adjustment to their base salary upon successful completion of the probationary period.
