About You

The Senior Business Product Owner for Academic Resource Planning will take the lead in building a more consistent, compliant and transparent approach to academic workforce planning across RMIT. Working within the START Program, this role supports how the university plans and allocates work for academics, strengthens payment accuracy, and helps ensure academic resource planning requirements are met for both permanent and casual staff. You will be stepping into a function that is evolving and would benefit from clearer governance, improved processes and a more unified way of working.

This role is ideal for someone with deep academic workforce planning expertise who can engage confidently with colleges, schools and senior leaders to lift planning rigour, while also translating requirements into a fit-for-purpose technical solution. You will work closely with the leads across the START Program, operational HR and academic units to align expectations, improve compliance with enterprise agreement obligations and create a future state planning model that the university can rely on. This is an opportunity to take real ownership during a period of transformation and help design practices that will influence how RMIT manages academic work for years to come.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have:

Demonstrated experience in workforce planning and service delivery within a complex tertiary or similarly scaled environment, with a strong understanding of how business processes impact operational outcomes.

Strong experience analysing and improving academic planning processes, with the ability to review current ways of working, identify inefficiencies, and design practical, end-to-end process and service delivery improvements.

Strong ability to represent and advocate for consistent, fit-for-purpose business processes, particularly across HR, workforce planning, and compliance, ensuring alignment across teams and functions.

Well-developed problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex operational challenges, assess impacts across the end-to-end process, and implement practical, scalable improvements.

Highly developed stakeholder engagement skills, with proven experience facilitating workshops, building strong relationships, and influencing diverse stakeholder groups to drive alignment, adoption, and shared outcomes.

Demonstrated ability to support and embed change, ensuring new processes and ways of working are effectively adopted and sustained across the business.

Strong commitment to service excellence and continuous improvement, with a focus on enhancing the staff and student experience through better ways of working.

About the Program of Work

The START (Strategic Transformation Academic Resourcing and Timetabling) Program is a coordinated transformation program to modernise academic resource planning and timetabling leading to improved payment assurance outcomes, improving transparency and enabling a more efficient operating model and better experience for students and staff. This role will be aligned with the Academic Resource Planning stream and work closely with other streams.
