People are at the heart of what we are and what we do. We want to attract outstanding, inspirational, and talented people, support them to succeed, and celebrate their success. Working at the University of Birmingham gives you access to the best financial and physical resources, a beautiful campus and an intellectually stimulating and diverse community. Our sector-leading development programmes have made the University a place where staff can thrive, and recognition by Athena Swan, Stonewall and Two Ticks demonstrates our commitment to supporting talented people from all backgrounds.

The School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham is a vibrant and thriving academic community, which moved to a new state-of-the-art research building in 2023. We provide an inclusive environment where we strive to support every member of staff in realising their career potential.

The School of Chemistry’s Analytical Facility provides comprehensive, high quality facilities and expertise for the examination and analysis of materials produced by the various synthetic chemistry research groups within the School, the University and external clients. The post holder will provide technical support to the facilities including, but not limited to, chromatography and mass spectrometry, with a focus on the instrumentation for separation of chemical mixtures, as well as general support to the research laboratories. Your role will include the operation and maintenance of instruments, providing guidance and training to users, (particularly regarding separation techniques and approaches), running samples, ensuring that the laboratory functions in a safe, efficient and effective manner, cryogen fills and any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Mass Spectrometry Facility Manager and Technical Manager.

As part of the school’s facilities and technical team your contribution will be important and valued by your colleagues and the research groups and users we support. You will be part of a collegiate School community with a supportive working environment formed by the School’s Facility and Technical Teams, Professional Services and Academic staff. You will be expected to demonstrate citizenship and develop and maintain generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with the School, ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs.

The successful candidate will have extensive relevant workplace experience, equivalent professional qualification or degree in an appropriate subject and GCSE level 2 (A*- C/4-9) or equivalent level 2 qualification in mathematics and English.

For further information, please contact: Dr Chris Williams, Mass Spectrometry Facility Manager c.m.williams.2@bham.ac.uk or Katherine Twiggs, Technical Manager, k.b.twiggs@bham.ac.uk
