About the role:
The UNSW IT Cyber Security directorate drives the strategic uplift of cyber security across the University. With several major cyber initiatives underway, this role plays a key part in their success.
The Senior IAM Engineer – Cyber will support the delivery of the University’s Cyber Security Enablement Program (the Program), a multi-year initiative designed to materially reduce the University’s exposure to cyber security risk through the implementation of technology and business changes. The primary purpose of the Senior IAM Engineer – Cyber role is the development and delivery of technical and business process associated with the Saviynt Identity Governance and Administration solution and support for operationalisation of the services.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Analyse business objectives, functional requirements, and technical constraints to design optimal identity solutions aligned with organisational strategy.
- Work closely with IT development teams, vendors, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into functional and technical specifications for Saviynt IGA integrations.
- Develop detailed technical documentation including solution designs, interface specifications, and configuration guidelines.
- Design, develop, test, and deploy complex integrations, connectors, and workflows for Saviynt Identity Governance and Administration (IGA).
- Enhance and maintain custom connectors, rules, and workflows to improve automation, performance, and scalability.
- Lead the design, management, and optimisation of UNSW’s identity integration services to Saviynt IGA and other IAM platforms such as Microsoft Entra ID and Entra External ID.
- Identify and implement tuning and optimisation opportunities across IAM platforms to improve system performance, reliability, and user experience.
- Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise for Saviynt IGA integrations, access governance, and lifecycle management processes.
- Investigation of operational requirements, problems, and opportunities, seeking effective business solutions through improvements in automated and/or process change.
- Collaborate with Cyber Security Operations, Infrastructure, and Application Support teams to ensure secure, reliable, and compliant identity management operations.
- Ensure all identity-related designs and implementations comply with Information Security policies, data protection standards, and enterprise architectural principles.
- Contribute to auditing, access certification, and compliance reporting to support regulatory and internal governance requirements.
- Champion continual refinement of the organisation’s identity integration development model, development toolkit, standards, and key policies and procedures.
- Assist with troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of IAM-related incidents, coordinating with vendors and internal teams to implement durable fixes.
- Build and maintain strong professional relationships with university stakeholders to foster trust, collaboration, and alignment on IAM initiatives.
- Identify key stakeholders, conduct change impact assessments in collaboration with the Organisational Change Manager and Project Manager, and ensure business readiness for IAM-related changes.
- Collaborate with Change and Project Leads to plan and implement change activities, ensuring smooth adoption of new IAM capabilities.
- Manage time effectively across multiple concurrent projects, balancing operational priorities and project deliverables.
- Contribute to knowledge management by maintaining up-to-date technical documentation, configuration repositories, and lessons learned.
- In collaboration with the Organizational Change Manager and Project Leads, implements plans for managing the change.

WHO YOU ARE:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in an enterprise Identity and Access Management (IAM) function or senior IT support role.
- Proven experience in implementing, configuring, and supporting Saviynt Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) solutions in complex enterprise environments.
- Hands-on software development experience using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET including VB.NET, C#.NET, HTML, XML, Web Services (SOAP/REST), PowerShell scripting, and SQL.
- Strong background in Identity Governance and Administration (IGA), with demonstrated experience in, Lifecycle management and automated provisioning/deprovisiong, Application onboarding and connector configuration, User access reviews and certification campaigns.
- Deep understanding of Directory Services (Active Directory, Entra ID) and Privileged Access Management (PAM).
- In-depth, enterprise-level knowledge of large-scale Entra ID, Active Directory environments including AAD Connect and synchronisation technologies.
- Comprehensive understanding of federated identity technologies and protocols, including SAML 2.0, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, WS-FED, App Proxy, MFA, Relay-State, etc.
- Advanced knowledge of authentication and authorization mechanisms, including Kerberos, NTLMv2, LDAP Auth, Digest, MD5, and Sicily.
- Proven ability to analyse complex IAM challenges and develop innovative, sustainable technical solutions.
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility in resolving issues and delivering quality outcomes under tight deadlines.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) and collaboration platforms such as Jira, SharePoint, and Confluence.
- Strong documentation, process design, and reporting skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical teams, management, and business stakeholders.
- Experience working within the University or Higher Education sector and understanding of academic identity lifecycles and associated challenges.
- Exposure to broader cybersecurity frameworks and integration between IAM and security monitoring tools (e.g. SIEM).
