About the Role

RMIT University is seeking a Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering to join the Department of Aerospace Engineering within the School of Engineering. This position presents an opportunity for a research-active scholar with demonstrated teaching leadership to contribute to the growth of one of Australia's leading aerospace programs.

The successful candidate will contribute to high-quality teaching, impactful research, and strong industry engagement across the Department's undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The role will suit an academic who is already developing a national research profile and a collaborative research program aligned with emerging aerospace technologies and systems.

You will lead and contribute to innovative teaching, curriculum development and program delivery, while also strengthening the Department's research capacity through externally funded research, high-quality publications, and supervision of higher-degree-by-research (HDR) candidates.

RMIT is particularly interested in candidates with research expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Propulsion
  • Aerodynamics
  • Aerospace materials and structures
  • Avionics
  • Digital engineering for aerospace systems
  • Space vehicles and systems
  • Crewed and uncrewed aircraft operations
  • Air-traffic management and control (crewed and uncrewed systems)

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to collaborative research programs and industry partnerships, embedding their expertise within the Department's research strategy and contributing to multidisciplinary initiatives across the School and College.

RMIT offers exceptional opportunities for aerospace researchers to engage with major national research initiatives and industry partnerships, including collaborations with:

  • Advanced Composites Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (ACM CRC)
  • ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centres (ITTC) for High-Speed Propulsion, Rocket and Launch Systems
  • Industry partners across defence, aerospace manufacturing and advanced engineering
  • The Sir Lawrence Wackett Defence and Aerospace Centre

The Department also maintains strong links with RMIT's Aviation Academy, providing opportunities to undertake research connected to aircraft operations and aviation systems.

Researchers can also leverage RMIT's advanced digital infrastructure, including the VxLab at the City campus, home to the Centre for Digital Innovation and advanced simulation capabilities such as the Eight360 NOVA Untethered Motion Simulator, enabling immersive simulation of complex vehicle environments including aircraft and spacecraft.

This role may also involve program management responsibilities, contributing to the strategic development and delivery of aerospace programs within the School.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate large courses and prepare and delivery programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, including high quality curriculum and program materials and ability to implement innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement.
  • Ability to manage a large program or a number of small programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to support student issues related to effective learning.
  • Emerging nationally recognised research track record including substantial record of research outputs in high quality outlets with a focus in one or more of the following areas: propulsion, aerodynamics, aerospace materials and structures, avionics, digital engineering for aerospace systems, and related applications including space vehicles and systems, crewed and uncrewed aircraft and their operations, and air-traffic control (crewed and uncrewed).
  • Extensive experience in research leadership with the ability to build and develop collaborative research teams, mentor academic staff to deliver high quality outcomes, attract and secure external research funding to sustain research effort and manage funded research projects including complex budgets and reporting requirements.
  • Extensive experience in supervising higher-degree-by-research candidates to maximise research performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage academic program team, supporting scholarly development of less experienced academic staff.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to financial, governance and quality management systems within a university.
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills including the ability to consult with senior executives, external bodies, produce executive reports, negotiate agreed directions, outcomes and targets within a collaborative environment.
