Senior Medical Health Physicist
Scope of Position
Supports the medical radiation safety program at the OSU Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) and affiliates; including Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine/Pharmacy, and the medical x-ray program. Ensure the timely completion of radioactive sealed source inventories and leak tests; radiation detection equipment calibrations; dose calibrator accuracy and linearity measurements; radiological surveys. Maintenance of waste storage facilities and radiation detection monitors. Provide room setup, surveys, and decontamination for outpatient and inpatient therapies. Provide patient consultation and education prior to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, discuss precautions and patient concerns, perform exposure calculations, and provide patient release criteria. Develop and/or provide radiation safety specific training.
Position Summary
Perform reviews of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology Quality Management Programs. Perform Audits of the use of radioactive material and radiation generating equipment to ensure regulatory compliance. Review construction projects and keep track of projects involving RAM and RGE use areas. Manage the OSU T&R Access Control program, including the review and approval or denial all applications for unescorted access to areas of increased controls, provide security trainings, assist with the testing of equipment, and maintaining all required documentation. Participate on committees or working groups as assigned. Assist with regulatory inspections.
Provide for a periodic review of the security of radioactive materials, radiation safety postings, and support radioactive materials receipt, transportation, and waste disposal programs. Provide support to the OSUWMC dosimetry and personnel exposure monitoring program. Monitor adherence to training requirements. Provide support for the accurate registration of radiation generating devices. Support decommissioning activities.
Participate in emergency response; this position is subject to 24-hour call in response to emergency and patient situations. Will require success completion of a criminal background check and the individual must successfully complete within 90 days of employment the Trustworthy and Reliable process for access to areas of increased controls. Hours for this position may vary.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelors degree in health physics, medical physics, physics, or nuclear engineering or equivalent education and experience. Master's degree in health physics, medical physics, physics, or nuclear engineering.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of four years of experience in the safe handling of radioactive materials and radiation generating devices; excellent verbal and written communication skill; experience in implementation of compliance activities and knowledge of state and federal radiation safety regulations.
