The School of Physics is one of the leading Physics schools in Australia. It offers a world class undergraduate physics degree, as well as a postgraduate PhD research program for over 50 students. 33 academic staff conduct theoretical and experimental research in quantum physics, astrophysics, fundamental physics; and condensed matter physics.

The Senior Production Engineer plays a key role in the development and advancement of a prototype electronic device as part of an innovative technology development program in quantum sensing with our industry partner, UBIQUT Pty. Ltd. This position requires significant experience and expertise in electronic device design, prototyping, and production as well as managing complex projects.

This role involves providing expert technical advice, working collaboratively with researchers and technical staff to drive the development of a novel sensing device prototype, coordinating the project delivery, providing high-level analytical reporting, supporting the development and management of communications, building key internal and external relationships, and providing administrative support critical to device development programs.

About the role

• Level 7 – ($113k – $123k) - plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 12 months
• Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to Prof. Dane McCamey, supporting the School of Physics and Faculty of Science, and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

• Coordinate the design, manufacture, and delivery of a prototype field-deployable quantum sensing device, applying innovative engineering methodologies.
• Develop, review, and manage detailed project plans, timelines, and resource allocations. In collaboration with the Production Manager, actively contribute to program planning and strategic decision-making in planning processes as required.
• Monitor, track, and critically analyse project deliverables against time, cost, and quality metrics, proactively addressing risks and recommending solutions to complex issues.
• Provide expert technical advice to project teams and stakeholders and monitor, track and report on the status of project deliverables to ensure time, cost and quality metrics are in line with approved project plans for assigned projects.
• Provide high level practical and proactive project support and administrative services, including facilitation of workshops and meetings, minute taking, action tracking, and comprehensive status reporting to senior management and external partners.
• Develop, implement, and maintain effective stakeholder engagement and communication strategies to support alignment and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and external organisations.
• Support adherence to UNSW governance pathways to ensure projects are managed within a defined, consistent and proven set of rules for project development.
• In collaboration with the Production Manager, undertake the design and implementation of an out-of-lab quantum magnetometer based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), including field testing and benchmarking.

• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant: (Selection Criteria)

• A relevant tertiary qualification complemented by a depth of subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience particularly in the areas of electronic engineering or technical product development.
• Prior experience in quantum technologies is advantageous but not essential.
• Demonstrated ability to apply advanced theoretical and technical knowledge to solve complex and novel engineering problems with minimal supervision.
• Experience providing high-level consultancy and expert advice in technical or engineering areas.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of preparing detailed reports and delivering presentations to a diverse audience including senior management and external partners.
• Sound stakeholder management skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
• Proficiency with relevant technical tools and software, including microwave/microelectronics systems and low-level programming languages such as C/C++ and/or FPGA hardware design languages.
• Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and complex workloads effectively.
• Project experience, with an understanding of the project life cycle and development of project plans, objectives and documentation.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
