Offer Description
The Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) is opening a selection procedure for a Senior Software Developer to carry out software development, maintenance and integration activities within the project “Development of the Gaia Archive Visualisation Service / GAVS”, funded by the ESA/PRODEX programme.
The candidate must have extensive experience, exceeding 15 years, in the analysis, design and development of Java software, as well as experience in the development of web applications using JavaScript and Model–View–Controller architectures.
The candidate must also have:
- experience with SQL and Python;
- experience in the analysis of astronomical data, in particular photometry and astrometry;
- at least two years of previous experience in technical interaction with ESA;
- proven experience with software version-control systems, in particular SVN and Git, continuous integration with Jenkins, and code-quality control using SonarQube;
- English language skills at B1 level or above;
- proficiency in Portuguese.
Work plan
The tasks to be carried out by the selected candidate include:
- development, maintenance and evolution of the GAVS software, including backend components and the implementation of new functionality for Gaia Data Release 4, as well as preparation of the system for Gaia Data Release 5;
- integration of GAVS with other Gaia Archive components, in coordination with ESA technical teams, including testing, validation and operational support;
- maintenance and evolution of the data-generation processes for visualisation (GAVS-data), including adaptation to new Gaia data products, models and formats;
- corrective and adaptive software maintenance, including dependency updates, implementation of cybersecurity requirements, continuous integration, quality control and technical documentation.
The research project will be carried out at LIP under the scientific supervision of André Moitinho de Almeida.
Duration: The fixed-term contract of uncertain duration is expected to last 32 months, starting on 1 September 2026.

Gross monthly remuneration (before tax and social security contributions) is 3.576,56 Euros/month.
Eligibility criteria

Selection process
The tender selection panel shall be formed by:

- Prof. Dr Paulo Garcia, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto;
- Profª Patricia Gonçalves, LIP/IST - University of Lisbon
- Alternate member – Dr Koraljka Muzic, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon;
- Alternate member – Prof. Dr José Figueiredo, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.
Evaluation criteria are the following:
Evaluation of the CV of the candidates, namely their educational background and past experience.
Each member of the panel will value the criteria for each candidate, taking into account the requirements of the duties to be performed, the adequacy of previous experience, his/her relationship to the relevant areas and sub-areas.
The selection will consider the applicant's Curriculum Vitae (80%) and their motivation letter (20%).
High-ranking candidates might be called for an interview, and the final decision will be based on the interview score alone.
After applying the selection criteria, the panel will prepare an ordered list of the approved candidates and their corresponding classification. In case none of the candidates can demonstrate suitable skills or background, the panel will not select any candidate.
Advertising / notification of results:
The results of the evaluation will be communicated by email; in case of disagreement, the candidates have a period of 10 working days to contest the decision, as provided for in the Code of Administrative Procedure in a preliminary hearing. At the end of this period, the arguments presented will be analysed by the jury committee, who will simultaneously communicate the final decision to all the candidates who submitted allegations. The final results of the shortlisted applicants will be communicated by e‐mail. In case of disagreement, the candidates have a period of 15 working days to contest the decision.
