Senior Staff Associate I

The Tow Center for Digital Journalism, based at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, provides journalists with the skills and knowledge to lead the future of digital journalism and serves as a research and development center for the profession as a whole. The Center commissions research in emerging areas, develops teaching methods and courses, and offers fellowships to academics, journalists and technologists.

The Tow Center is seeking a Senior Staff Associate I - Computational Journalism to tackle a range of computational journalism projects and cutting-edge issues in digital journalism through a combination of field research, workshops, events and published findings. Research priorities will include but not be limited to: AI Journalism and Local News.

Under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director, the Senior Staff Associate I will work with the Center's Research Team to:

  • Collaborate with members of the existing Tow Team to design and build scalable applications, services and experiences
  • Build tools to help reporting efforts
  • Produce their own research (which may include written reports, journalistic experiments, events, workshops, panels or other forms)

This is a full-time, one year appointment. The position is externally funded and may be renewable contingent on performance and the continuation of available funding.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Demonstrated experience with journalism research and the ability to produce content that is timely, rigorous, authoritative, contains original ideas and analysis, and relevant to the journalism industry. Demonstrated ability to write and edit well for the Tow Centers' community: working journalists, newsroom managers and leaders, academic researchers, journalism students and educators.

Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in journalism, communications, media, technology, or a closely related field preferred. Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time. Flexibility in responding to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently. Experience with Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing.
