The School of Engineering within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment is seeking a creative, curious and practical Senior Technical Officer (Civil Engineering) to support the Structural Engineering Lab on a 12-month fixed-term basis.

This opportunity would suit someone with a trade background (e.g. Fitter & Turner, Boilermaker, Carpenter or similar) who enjoys hands-on, problem-solving work. We’re looking for someone with a “tinkerer” mindset - someone who can think outside the box and bring practical ideas to life.

This role offers variety, autonomy, and the chance to contribute to teaching and research outcomes. It may also provide exposure to future opportunities within the team environment, making it well suited to both early-career tradespeople looking to broaden their experience, and experienced or semi-retired professionals seeking engaging, low-stress work.

You’ll be joining a close-knit, collaborative team where interpersonal skills and a proactive approach are key.

As a Senior Technical Officer, Civil Engineering, you will:

  • Support teaching and research activities by providing technical expertise and training on equipment and engineering software
  • Develop and implement practical technical solutions to support School operations and initiatives
  • Maintain laboratory equipment to a high standard, including minor repairs and coordination of servicing/calibration
  • Assist with laboratory-based teaching, student projects (including HDR and capstone), and research activities
  • Contribute to outreach, industry engagement and cross-school collaboration
  • Ensure compliance with OHS and risk management requirements

In a typical week, you will:

  • Construct or modify experimental equipment and source materials
  • Prepare and support practical student experiments
  • Develop safety documentation and ensure safe work practices
  • Support student research projects (e.g. materials testing such as concrete with alternative aggregates)

Who are we?

Join Deakin and be part of a university that’s redefining what education should be. With more than 61,000 students across our campuses in Melbourne Burwood, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront, Warrnambool, and our growing global presence in Indonesia and India, Deakin is a truly connected and forward-thinking institution.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Extensive experience and specialist knowledge, or broad knowledge in technical or related fields, or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. This may include experience in a concrete production and testing environment, or steel or timber fabrication and testing environments. An understanding of structural testing techniques and equipment would be beneficial.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders, clients and/or students
  • A Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering with subsequent relevant experience, or equivalent practical/trade-based experience in a related field

Here’s how to apply:

Submit your resume and a short cover letter outlining your skills and experience.
