Service & Repair Assistant (Motor Equipment)

A full time Service & Repair Assistant (Motor Equipment) working Monday through Friday with Saturday and Sunday pass-days. Hours will be 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and hours may vary based on operational need. This position performs a variety of repetitive, semiskilled tasks in repair, maintenance and servicing of small engines, lawn mowers, tractors, snow plows and automotive vehicles. Major Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and servicing of grounds equipment, automotive equipment and mechanical equipment such as lawn mower blade sharpening, oil changes, bearing replacement, removal and replacement of such components as starters, fuel pumps, water pumps, gas tanks, carburetors, exhaust system components, springs and radiators.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on light and medium duty vehicles, tractors, mowers and other non-motorized/motorized grounds equipment.
  • Perform welding using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment not requiring complex planning and layout or the use of special procedures.
  • Assist mechanics in making major mechanical repairs by performing such tasks as disassembling and assembling engines, engine components or mechanical equipment, cleaning parts and inspecting them for wear.
  • Change and repair tires, assembles and disassembles automotive equipment and other machinery as directed.
  • Assist in lifting and positioning heavy parts and assemblies, cleans parts, lubricates vehicles, changes batteries.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in mechanical work (i.e. mechanical repairs on automotive and other motor driven equipment) under the supervision of a journey level skilled trades person, or completion of an appropriate two year technical school course (post high school.)
  • Must have group one NYS inspection license or ability to get one within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the methods, material, tools and equipment used for making a variety of mechanical repairs on automotive and other motor driven equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the operation of small engines, lawn mowers, tractors and automotive equipment.
  • Ability to work various holidays on a rotational basis.
  • Ability to use the tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical trade.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Working knowledge of windows-based computer and basic keyboarding skills.
  • Ability to work On-Call shifts.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
