Mission or Goal of Unit: Pursue the Research, Clinical, and Education Missions of the academic medical center in the areas of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care. Through bench research, clinical trials and the rigorous study of prevention and control, our scientists pursue the many roles of medicine in treating, preventing and controlling the adverse effects of cancer. Our hallmark activity is translational research, where our physicians and scientists work to bring laboratory discoveries to the patient bedside as quickly and safely as possible. Through our educational programs, our faculty train the next generation of scientists and physicians to further advance science and practice.

Chief Purpose of this position: The VCU School of Medicine Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking a Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Program Medical Director/Leader to oversee all clinical care of the SCD Program (i.e. IP, OP and infusion efforts), manage 15-18 staff, participate in governmental partnerships, relate to SCD programs around the state through the VA Dept of Health and represent VCU nationally as the SCD Programmatic leader in respective societal efforts (i.e. The American Society for Hematology, The Alliance for Sickle Cell Disease Centers, etc.) and maintain a clinical practice.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Teaching | Faculty member will train medical students, residents and fellows. Expected to actively participate in providing clinical research opportunities to fellows.

Research | This faculty member will be responsible for bringing the most innovative clinical trials in sickle cell disease to VCU and the region utilizing intra and extramural partnerships. This position will be expected to establish extramural partnerships with the ultimate goal of offering the most innovative drugs/treatments in sickle cell disease to patients at VCU before they are standard of care. Efforts to obtain funding for your research in areas of focus consistent with the mission of the School of Medicine and the Department must be demonstrated. In addition, reasonable scholarly activities, such as publications, presentations at national meetings and participation in appropriate academic organizations, are expected.

Service | It is expected that the faculty member in this role will be active in decreasing Health Disparities in the community served by VCU.

Clinical | Provides care for patients in the outpatient clinic with a focus on sickle cell disease and attends on the inpatient wards and/or consult service.

Administrative | Medical Director, Sickle Cell Program - will oversee all clinical care (i.e. IP, OP and infusion efforts), manage 15-18 staff, participate in governmental partnerships, relate to SCD programs around the state through the VA Dept of Health and represent VCU nationally as the SCD Programmatic leader in respective societal efforts (i.e. The American Society for Hematology, The Alliance for Sickle Cell Disease Centers, etc.).

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Board certified or eligible in hematology
  • Eligible for Virginia medical license
  • Evidence of accomplishment/potential (e.g., publications, trial PI) during medical school, residency, fellowship, and/or early academic career
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Salary Range: Commensurate
