SLP Clinical Externship Coordinator
Job Description
SUMMARY: Reporting to the Chairperson, the SLP (Speech Language Pathology) Clinical Externship Coordinator is responsible for a range of services for the speech-language pathology master’s students, focusing on the clinical externships. Specifically, this role arranges all off-campus clinical experiences, conducts visits to external sites, works to develop contracts with new off-campus sites, maintains accurate records for student off-campus experiences, and maintains close contact with the off-site SLP supervisors and the off-site SLP students. The SLP Externship Coordinator will also supervise student clinicians at the Center for Speech-Language Pathology and other community-based clinics.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in the supervision of student clinicians in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
- Conduct individual conferences with student-clinicians as needed.
- Partner with the SLP Clinic Director to ensure each student obtains clinical experience across the scope of practice during the program.
- Maintain familiarity with licensure and certification regulations, especially as they pertain to clinical practicum for the SLP students.
- Arrange for off-campus clinical placements for the students in the SLP Program.
- Provide the off-campus site supervisors with information concerning the student clinicians and the paperwork that needs to be completed with and for the students.
- Communicate regularly with the SLPs at the off-campus sites who are supervising the students.
- Conduct in-person site visits to the off-campus clinical sites to observe the students and meet with their off-campus supervisors.
- Oversee and maintain contracts with off-campus clinical sites to be sure they are current.
- Identify new clinical sites for SLP students and manage the process of establishing contracts between MSU and each of these sites.
- Maintain accurate records detailing the clinical experiences obtained by the students in their off-campus clinical sites.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners in northern NJ and beyond.
- Maintain community service relationships (e.g., AmeriCorps,) and establish new associations as appropriate.
- Ensure that all off-campus supervisors have completed the required supervision training required by the Council for Clinical Supervision of ASHA.
- Offer seminars in clinical practica to student-clinicians focused on professional skills development (interviews, resume writing, etc.).
- Perform other duties as assigned. Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Master’s degree from an accredited university in speech-language pathology.
- Minimum three years of professional clinical experience with both pediatric and/or adult populations.
- Minimum three years of supervisory or administrative experience.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
- Hold or be eligible for New Jersey State Licensure in SLP.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (for site visits and community partnerships).
PREFERRED:
- Experience in the supervision of university students.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a collaborative work style.
- Experience working in multiple clinical settings (e.g., hospitals, schools, private practice, rehabilitation centers).
- Familiarity with university policies, procedures, and academic calendars.
- Experience with community outreach and partnership development.
- Knowledge of various clinical assessment and treatment approaches.
- Professional involvement in state or national SLP organizations.
- Familiarity with accreditation standards (CAA - Council on Academic Accreditation).
- Experience mentoring new professionals or clinical fellows.
