Job Description

About Boston College and the Office of Residential Life

Boston College is a Division One university with approximately 9,600 undergraduate students (8,000 residential), located on 118 acres in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, a beautiful suburb seven miles from the center of Boston. Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863, Boston College has strong Jesuit Catholic educational values, which are used as a foundation for our work with and care for students.

The mission of the Office of Residential Life is to create a respectful, healthy, and safe living community for our residents. We are committed to integrating the Ignatian tradition into the formation of each student by connecting their intellectual, ethical, religious, and spiritual lives through a myriad of programs and services. Our role in this formational development is achieved by promoting the academic mission, encouraging responsible and ethical behaviors, engaging residents in conversations regarding diversity, and creating safe, well-managed learning environments where students can seek the greater good.
Under the leadership of the Associate Vice President and Director of Residential Education and Director of Operations, the department consists of 40 professional staff members, 22 graduate positions, 192 RAs, and 20 additional student employees.

Primary Areas of Responsibility

The Social Media, Access & Web Specialist is responsible for the department's communication, outreach, and digital engagement efforts by managing marketing initiatives, maintaining technology platforms, and enhancing communication to students, families, and campus partners. Specifically, this position manages the department's website design/content, social media, and marketing, and front-end management of all access-related issues. The position is also responsible for assisting with staff training on departmental technologies, conducting analysis and developing new business processes as needed, and suggesting ideas for new business processes.

The role centers on maintaining a dynamic, accurate, and engaging digital presence for Residential Life. This includes managing and updating content across more than 200 web pages, continually evaluating site structure, and creating new pages, images, videos, and other media that strengthen clarity and usability. The position works closely with campus partners to understand evolving needs and ensure the website effectively supports students, families, and staff.

Another component of the job involves leading social media strategy and content creation. This includes monitoring engagement, analyzing performance metrics, and making data-informed adjustments to improve reach and impact. The role gathers and produces multimedia content in collaboration with Residential Life, Student Affairs, and other university divisions, while proactively identifying opportunities to highlight key programs, events, and initiatives such as Room Selection or RA recruitment.

Marketing responsibilities span digital and print communication, from newsletters and flyers to videos and branded materials. The position develops and implements marketing strategies that promote departmental services, maintain a consistent brand identity, and support student engagement. It also contributes to assessment efforts by designing surveys, collecting data, and preparing reports. Collaboration is central - working with staff, faculty, student leaders, and the Senior Associate Director for Marketing Communications to ensure alignment with institutional messaging and goals.

The role also includes year-round management of card access for students, staff, guests, and vendors. This involves troubleshooting and resolving access issues independently or in collaboration with appropriate staff, maintaining accurate key and combination inventories, and updating access permissions as changes occur. The position supports departmental technology needs as well, serving in a 24/7 on-call rotation for tech and access control issues, assisting with training and troubleshooting, and recommending new tools or software that improve operational efficiency.

Each staff member in the Division of Student Affairs is expected to support division and university-wide initiatives, staff events, and serve on committees as needed.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $59,400 to $74,250; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of relevant experience, with strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience in web design, social media management, digital content creation and familiarity with common design and office software; experience in Housing or Student Affairs is preferred.
  • The candidate should be detail-oriented, able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, customer-service focused, and collaborative.
  • Demonstrated initiative to work regularly with colleagues across the department to identify and promote programs, events, and initiatives, and to support collaborative problem-solving.
  • Ability to adopt new digital tools and technologies to enhance communication, outreach, and operational efficiency.
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required during move-in/move-out, transitions, and emergencies.
