Social Science Research Professional 2

Stanford University is seeking a Social Science Research Professional 2 to contribute substantive science and policy work to an innovative academic program on research translation focused on environmental health research and science policy. The person in this position would work closely with the project PI and Associate Director to conduct analytical studies on a variety of scientifically related policies, projects, programs and issues in support of a function, research initiative, program and / or organizational unit, or in research of new or changing systems and programs. Assists in policy and program planning, development, administration, management and implementation; interprets, monitors and analyzes information regarding policies and procedures and provides consultative services to department administrators and other stakeholders. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in environmental health sciences, public health, occupational health, epidemiology, toxicology, systematic review methods or related field as well as knowledge of and practice in, environmental health science and policy in the United States. The successful candidate will have a publication track record in the peer reviewed literature and demonstrate a high level of written and oral communications skills specifically in communicating with scientists and non-scientists.

Duties include:

  • Assist in grant submissions including scientific and administrative sections
  • Engage with research collaborators and community partners to engage in relevant research and research translation in government chemical policy and systemic review at federal level.
  • Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planned and coordinating experimental protocols.
  • Research, monitor, and analyze chemical regulations, legislation and related scientific literature.
  • Research and summarize best scientific practices in field related to chemical risk assessment and systematic review methods.
  • Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing technical guidance and quality assessment.
  • Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  • Solve problems, and make decisions that affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
  • Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
  • Coordinates efforts with a variety of external and internal contacts to engage in relevant research and research translation in federal chemical policy and systemic review that builds upon the nationally and internationally recognized work of the program; provides technical guidance and quality assessment.
  • Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
  • Translate and communicate the impact of new chemical regulations, legislation, or research to the general public and policy makers through public comments, reports, briefings, executive summaries, and/or public presentations
  • Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
  • Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree in biological sciences, health sciences, bioinformatics, statistics or an applicable related social science field.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and experience in an applicable social science.

  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.
