Summary of Position
The Sociology Department at RRCC is seeking innovative, culturally competent, and student-centered individuals to serve as part-time Sociology Instructors. Responsibilities include delivering high-quality instruction in face-to-face courses through developing inclusive and interactive course content, growth-oriented assessments, and a supportive classroom environment that nurtures student engagement and academic success. Teaching assignments may take place in both daytime and evening hours on the college's Lakewood campus. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, can effectively address contemporary issues from diverse sociological perspectives during classroom discussions, and is skilled at fostering a sense of community while serving the diverse needs of our student population.
This position's primary focus is effective and engaging teaching, curriculum development, student assessment, timely communication with both students and staff and supporting departmental initiatives. Additional responsibilities may include grading, planning activities/lectures, grading, maintaining student records, participating in departmental meetings, professional development, and student advising. The instructor is expected to maintain regular campus hours, adhere to institutional policies, and remain current in both the discipline and instructional methods.
This position reports to the Sociology Department Chair.

- Introduction to Sociology
- Sociology of Diversity
- Environmental Sociology
- Sociology of Deviant Behavior
- Sociology of Family Dynamics
- Sociology of Death and Dying

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of both classical and contemporary sociological theory.
- Knowledge of sociological research methods and research ethics.
- Knowledge of contemporary social issues and sociological literature.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach students using traditional and alternative methods of instruction.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate educational technology and platforms into the classroom.
- Ability to work from campus (primarily our Lakewood campus).
- Ability to collaborate in diverse teams while demonstrating respect for differing perspectives and fostering a positive work environment.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, organization, and time management skills and general technological proficiency.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree from a fully accredited institution in sociology or at least 18 completed graduate hours in sociology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching Sociology at the college level, particularly in community college settings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Sociology and experience using non-traditional learning environments.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with and supporting students from diverse populations, which may include but are not limited to, historically marginalized populations such as people of color, LGBTQ+ community members, veterans, first-generation graduates, and people with disabilities.
- Experience with co-teaching and/or interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Experience in community service or partnerships that enhance the learning environment.
- Experience in developing and delivering online/hybrid courses.
Physical & Cognitive Demands
The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.
- Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
- This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment, including phones, copiers, etc.
- The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
Advertised Pay
The pay for this position is $1,177.73 - $1,294.58 per credit hour without lab and with Vocational Lecture/Lab $1,660.54 - $1,826.60, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt position and may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need.
