The Computer Science Department (CSD) is one of the seven academic departments in the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science (SCS). Our Technology for Effective and Efficient Learning (TEEL) Lab is seeking a Software Engineer (Back End Systems) to maintain, improve and evolve the cloud infrastructure that powers our learning and research platforms.
The TEEL Lab (https://www.cmu.edu/teel/) develops data-informed educational technology to improve teaching and learning in computing and STEM disciplines. Our work combines research, software development, and real-world deployment across community colleges and workforce training initiatives. Learn more about Sail at https://sailplatform.org.
Core Responsibilities
- Perform back end focused software development
- Ensure the platform's reliability, performance and extensibility
- Design new capabilities that enable scalable experimentation and analytics.
- Work closely with a UX designer, front-end developers, and education researchers to translate design concepts into responsive, accessible, and production-ready applications.

Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience developing and maintaining production back-end systems.
- Strong proficiency in Python, Java, or TypeScript, and experience with frameworks such as Spring Boot. This experience must be recent/current.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and working with OpenAPI/Swagger.
- Hands-on experience with SQL (especially MySQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB).
- Experience deploying and monitoring services on Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm).
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, Azure Pipelines, or Jenkins.
- Comfort with Linux-based development, version control (Git), and agile workflows.
- A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
