Job Summary

The Specialist, Facilities Custodial Trainer, under immediate supervision of the Facilities Custodial Manager is an important position to the college because all duties performed are visible and contribute greatly to the environment and overall appeal at each campus and in each building. This position plays a key role in ensuring Salt Lake Community College delivers consistent, high-quality custodial services across all campuses.

This position delivers hands-on training, coaching, and skill development for new and current custodial staff to support a safe, clean, and functional environment across all SLCC campuses. It ensures all required custodial training is completed and maintained, promoting consistent and reliable facilities support. Responsibilities include teaching proper cleaning methods, safe equipment use, adherence to safety standards, and compliance with departmental policies.

This position has a regular schedule but requires flexibility and must be available to work on call for snow removal, events set up and other building clean up emergencies, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Day Shift: 8am-4:30pm
Must be willing to adjust schedule as needed, including occasional night and weekend shifts.
Starting Salary: $45,559.36 or $21.90 per hour

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Train and mentor new and existing custodial staff, including onboarding, demonstrations, hands-on instruction, and refresher training.
  • Teach proper cleaning methods, custodial procedures, equipment operation, and safe chemical handling.
  • Reinforce safety protocols, PPE use, and emergency response procedures.
  • Observe staff performance, provide coaching and feedback, and identify training needs or performance gaps.
  • Create, update, and deliver training materials such as manuals, checklists, lesson plans, and videos.
  • Maintain accurate training documentation and records.
  • Ensure staff understand and comply with OSHA, ISSA, SDS, and institutional safety standards.
  • Promote safe handling, storage, and use of chemicals and equipment.
  • Conduct safety drills and report hazards, unsafe practices, or incidents.
  • Model and uphold departmental standards and safety requirements.
  • Provide equipment orientation, daily care instruction, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Assist with equipment issues, report repair needs, and help maintain equipment logs and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Support inventory management of cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Work with managers and supervisors to coordinate training schedules and identify process improvements.
  • Attend department meetings and contribute to staff development initiatives.
  • Maintain professional relationships and communicate effectively with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Strong knowledge of custodial standards, cleaning methods, equipment, and safety regulations.
  • Ability to train, coach, and mentor staff with diverse learning styles.
  • Computer and data entry skills, including MS Office and timecard systems.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs., use ladders, and perform tasks requiring standing, walking, bending, and exposure to chemicals and equipment noise.
  • Flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to complete and maintain all required training.
  • Assist custodial teams during peak workloads, special projects, or emergencies (spills, floods, snow removal).
  • Perform minor custodial duties inside and outside facilities as needed.
  • Assist event setup crews when required.
  • Act as a resource for staff with questions about procedures or policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of custodial standards, cleaning methods, procedures, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ISSA, SLCC safety requirements, SDS labeling, and proper chemical handling
  • Ability to train, coach, and mentor staff with diverse learning styles and varying skill levels.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups and communicate clearly in English.
  • Ability to create and deliver training materials, documentation, and instructional content.
  • Computer and data entry skills, including proficiency with MS Office and timecard systems.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail; able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to troubleshoot custodial equipment and provide basic maintenance training.
  • Ability to maintain professional working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to safely lift 75 lbs. and regularly use ladders.
  • Ability to complete and maintain all required training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Minimum qualifications

Must have one of the following combinations of education and experience:

  • Associate degree or 2 years post high school
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience
  • Equivalent combo of education & experience

Note:

  • Substitutions for education/experience on a 1:1 basis.
  • Part-time direct work experience may be substituted for full-time work experience, on a pro-rated basis.

Must have a valid UT Driver License.
