About the Institute

The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment is a research institute within Western Sydney University. The Institute conducts fundamental and applied research in ecology, physiology, genetics and global change biology. Within the past decade, the Institute has become a world-leading centre of excellence in ecosystem function and environmental responses to climate change. The Opportunity

The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment are seeking a talented and motivated research assistant to join our dynamic team on casual basis. You will be responsible for spatial analysis, mapping and data collection on the Quantification of carbon sequestration in urban forests research project. 

 

Main Responsibilities Include 

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Developing high-quality, spatial analysis and mapping of carbon storage with remotely sensed GIS and forest inventory data.
  • Leading data collection. 


About You

  • Proficiency in using ESRI products, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Field Maps, with expertise in supervised classifications, georeferencing, and publishing detailed high-quality maps for reports.
  • Strong data management and analysis skills, with experience in geospatial data manipulation and analysis using tools such as Python, R, or SQL.
  • Familiarity with carbon mapping and monitoring methodologies, or a willingness to learn.
  • A background or interest in environmental science, ecology, forestry, or related disciplines is desirable, but not essential.
  • Experience with field data collection methods and tools (e.g., GPS, tree measurements, etc.).
  • Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning techniques, such as random forests, support vector machines, and convolutional neural networks, and their applications in remote sensing and geospatial analysis.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to new challenges and technologies.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaborative tools (e.g., Jira, Slack).
  • The ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with scientific writing and the ability to contribute to technical reports and research papers.

 

Remuneration: HEW 7, Step 1 Casual Hourly Rate of $68.04
