About the Office of Research

The Radiation Safety Office (RSOf) in the Office of Research supports both research and clinical uses of radioactive materials and radiation generating equipment for the University and affiliate partners.

Job Overview

The RSOf is seeking a Sr. Health Physics Tech to join their team. This position will maintain an on-site presence to support regulatory compliance and radiation safety related activities, including routine and non-routine. Primary duties are hands-on with some data entry and report generating responsibilities.

Essential Functions

Staff Health Physics Technician 2

  • Participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Receive, survey, record and distribute radioactive material packages as instructed by supervisor (i.e., review, inspect and determine placement of packages; conducting appropriate contamination surveys and record data; and perform necessary follow-up with appropriate departments).
  • Assist in the collection, processing, disposal and shipment of radioactive waste in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Survey laboratory for radioactive contamination and violations of the University of Cincinnati Radiation Control and Safety Program.
  • Provide radiation safety assistance to hospitals as directed (i.e., monitor patient rooms and adjacent areas and implement the necessary precautions).
  • Maintain inventory of radioactive materials and other records.
  • Calibrate survey equipment under direct supervision.
  • Keep the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer or Radiation Safety Officer informed of any violations of government regulations or University Radiation Safety policy.
  • Act as first responder for the Radiation Safety Office.
  • Instruct Radiation Safety personnel and others as necessary on radiation safety policies and procedures.

Additional Essential Functions

  • Perform all duties of the Staff Health Physics Technician 2.
  • Coordinate the radioactive waste management operations including, but not limited to: scheduling pickups; picking up waste from laboratories; processing, packaging, and disposing of waste in accordance with department procedures; maintaining records; and ensuring related surveys are performed as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with a variety of individuals internal and external to the department.
  • Inspect and prepare radioactive materials for shipment or disposal.
  • Calibrate survey equipment and assist in the maintenance of other radiation safety equipment.
  • Check sealed radioactive sources for leakage; inventory sealed sources.
  • Instruct radiation safety personnel and others as necessary on radiation safety policies and practices.
  • Ability to consistently produce high-quality, accurate work and records free from errors.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Required Education

  • Associate’s Degree in Physical or Biological Science.
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Trainings/Certifications

  • Acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a valid HAZMAT Commercial Driver’s License within three (3) months of employment.

Required Experience

Three (3) years related experience.

Additional Qualifications Considered

Experience with radiation generating equipment (x-rays) and general knowledge of relevant state and/or federal regulations.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to bend, reach, pull, push and lift up to 40 pounds without mechanical assistance.

Salary/Hourly Pay Rate Information

$33.95 an hour
