Staff Accountant
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Accounting, Finance, or Economics. Two (2) years of full-time financial accounting experience. Experience with performing reconciliations, financial analysis and/or various report preparation. Experience with general ledger programs. Experience with Microsoft Excel or a similar tool to include but not limited to V-Lookup, Pivot Tables, Macros.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Accounting and/or an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License. Knowledge and use of analytic tools (i.e. Macro, Power BI, SmartView, etc.). Experience with a financial module (i.e. Oracle, PeopleSoft). Query tool experience. Experience working in a Foundation.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Staff Accountant supports the Stony Brook Foundations' mission by working across all phases of corporate accounting and finance, including but not limited to, reconciliations, fixed asset capitalization, account analysis, and report preparation. The primary responsibilities include performing daily and monthly account reconciliations, managing fixed asset accounting, supporting operational accounting responsibilities, and ensuring accurate recording of financial transactions. The ideal candidate will maintain the integrity of financial records by identifying discrepancies, investigating variances, and working with internal departments to resolve issues. Additional duties may include assisting with month-end close processes, supporting tax compliance reporting and audit requests. They will work with Associate and Senior Accountants and advise internal and external stakeholders to support Stony Brook Foundation's goals.
- Perform accounting functions and collaborate with associate and senior accountants on reconciliations, fixed asset capitalization and depreciation, account analysis, and report preparation. Perform accounting functions including reconciliation of general ledger and sub-ledgers transactions and posting.
- Reconcile transactions on a daily, monthly and annual basis.
- Manage operational accounting activities such as new account opening, fund transfers, review of AP related transactions for appropriate tax related coding and withholding, etc.
- Resolves account and business-related problems, discrepancies and follows up with departments and related parties.
- Other duties as assigned.
Special Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
