Staff Associate I

Position Summary

The Staff Associate I in the Department of Dermatology in Dr. Abaci’s Lab will be assisting in experiments in the lab, and working on her own project in the lab. This will involve experiments on animals and data acquisition and analysis.

Duties

  • 60% - executing and planning experiments, including in vitro skin culture and tissue engineering, characterization through immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, and other assays
  • 20% - data analysis, organization, and presentation
  • 10% - in vivo grafting studies in mice and pigs
  • 10% - maintaining lab, mentoring and supervising students, participating in lab meetings

Functional Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of cell culture (including primary cells and iPSCs), skin tissue engineering, and skin anatomy and function
  • Strong knowledge of characterization techniques including immune-based assays and confocal microscopy, cryopreservation and sectioning
  • Familiarity with scientific writing for progress reports, manuscripts or presentations
  • Understanding of laboratory safety and aseptic techniques

Problem Solving

  • Ability to apply analytical and critical thinking to troubleshoot experimental issues and develop or optimize protocols based on established procedures

Decision Making/Autonomy

Level of supervision required, on a scale of 1 (least) to 10 (most) – 3

Degree of independent judgment expected, on a scale of 1 (least) to 10 (most) – 7

Leadership

  • Might need to mentor undergraduate or graduate students, but no supervisory responsibilities required

Technical Expertise

  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot common laboratory equipment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools, GraphPad, Photoshop, and ImageJ/Fiji

Communication Skills

  • Ability to share experimental findings in formal and informal settings
  • Maintenance of clear and detailed records in lab notebooks and shared documents
  • Ability to prepare figures, write manuscripts, and present data

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, or related field
  • Two years of related experience preferred.
