Staff Developer

We are seeking a very experienced software developer to contribute to the technical direction of our OpenSAFELY platform. This role blends hands-on software development with collaborative decision-making. Your responsibilities will include platform design, aligning technical strategies across projects, and implementing practical solutions that meet our organisation's evolving needs.

In this collaborative environment, you'll be one of the key contributors to the architecture and development of components within the OpenSAFELY platform. You will also play a crucial role in mentoring, providing technical guidance and training to team members across disciplines. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys being deeply involved in coding while also sharing their knowledge and expertise to support a vibrant and supportive team culture.

OpenSAFELY is a highly secure, modular, open-source data analysis platform created by the team at the Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science. The platform combines best practice from both academia and the open-source software community and has been deployed across the full electronic health records of the whole population of England.

The Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science is a mixed team of clinicians, software developers, programme managers, policy experts, and traditional academic researchers, all pooling skills and knowledge to create a modern, open, collaborative ecosystem for health research. We do this by shipping code, delivering papers, building capacity, and advocating for new ways of working.

The successful applicant will provide strategic technical leadership and hands-on engineering expertise to drive the delivery of high-quality digital outputs, ensuring that all software development aligns with the overarching objectives of the Bennett Institute. Responsibilities will include undertaking complex software design tasks, championing automation and reproducibility across the organisation, and providing technical guidance to a multidisciplinary team to foster a culture of continuous improvement and interdisciplinary collaboration.

You will be based at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Radcliffe Primary Care Building, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG as your normal place of work, but you will be able to agree a pattern of regular remote working with your line manager.
