The Pritchard lab in the Genetics Department at Stanford University is seeking a Staff Scientist (Software Developer 2) to conceptualize, develop, supervise, and implement novel computational approaches for genomics. The successful applicant must have experience in the main areas of application – functional or single cell genomics and/or statistical genetics -- as well as strong experience in modern computational statistics and machine learning. This position will be on-site.
The successful applicant will have broad responsibility for providing technical direction on multiple projects conducted by the lab as well as leading projects of their own. They will contribute to all phases of project development including conceptualization, design and implementation of algorithms, computational analysis of genomic and other omics data, simulations and testing of code, and preparation of scientific manuscripts and revisions. Strong communication skills (speaking and writing) are essential. The work will require innovative programming and analysis skills with an emphasis on algorithmic development for machine learning and/or statistical computing. Mentoring trainees on technical aspects of their project will be an essential part of this job.
Duties include:
- Propose, conceptualize, design, implement, and develop solutions for difficult and complex applications independently.
- Supervise and mentor PhD students and postdocs, as necessary, working on all phases of research projects.
- Engage in long-term strategic planning.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems.
- Lead projects, as necessary, for special systems and application development in areas of complex problems.
- Contribute to manuscript preparation and revisions as lead- or co-author.
- Contribute to grant preparation.
- Participate in scientific meetings and journal clubs.
Other duties may also be assigned.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must have a proven track record of developing state-of-the-art computational methods for data analysis, going all the way from conceptualization and theoretical development to implementation, testing, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
They must have outstanding technical skills in machine learning and/or statistical methods with experience in developing new approaches.
They must have training and research experience (preferably at postdoctoral level) in at least one of the following areas of application: functional genomics, single cell genomics, statistical genetics.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.
- Proficiency with application design and data modeling.
- Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.
- Effective communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
- Ability to lead activities on structured team development projects.
- Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
- Knowledge of application domain.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
- Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.
- Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May work extended hours, evening and weekends.
- The successful candidate will work in-person daily on the Stanford University campus.
Salary
The expected pay range for this position is $131,992 to $160,555 per annum.
