Standardized Patient (PRN) - Immersive Learning Center
Position Summary
Standardized Patients (SPs) serve WashU Medicine under the supervision of the Immersive Learning Center. SPs are an important part of the education of health profession learners. SPs are individuals trained to portray the personal history, physical symptoms, emotional characteristics, and everyday concerns of a patient during simulated provider-patient encounters for the training and assessment of healthcare students. SPs are trained to assess communication skills and to provide constructive written and verbal feedback.
SPs work in a part-time, as needed position. Available dates and hours of work are determined by curricular needs.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Portray patients using standardized scripts, including being interviewed and examined by students. Physical examinations are limited to non-invasive procedures, including, but not limited to, abdominal exams, chest exams (heart, lungs), knee exams, musculoskeletal exams, neurological exams, etc. Examinations do not include invasive procedures such as breast, genital or rectal exams.
- Assess learners using provided checklist. Provide verbal and written feedback using University guidelines after student encounters.
- Attend and actively participate in training sessions for case portrayal and checklist calibration before each scheduled session as well as other ongoing trainings. The number and length of training sessions will vary depending on the type of sessions.
- Study and learn scripts for accurate portrayals.
- Observe other SPs and be observed during sessions for training as well as portrayal and assessment calibration and feedback.
- Assist in session administration, including set-up and break-down, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range
$17.87 - $27.06 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
