Job Description Summary: Regional Assistant Dean for Statewide Campus South West Region located in Huntington, WV. Seeking Full-Time or Part-Time – Negotiable. The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) is seeking a Regional Assistant Dean who will monitor the progress and performance of students based within his/her Statewide Campus (SWC) region during years three and four of the curriculum. The physician in this position serves as the chief academic, administrative, financial and public relations liaison for WVSOM at a specific SWC region. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Predoctoral Clinical Education and will have a regular and ongoing presence in the SWC Region listed above.

This is a non-classified position at 0.60 FTE (approx. 3 days per week) and is exempt from FLSA provisions regarding overtime. Base salary for a 60% appointment is $117,000 with full state benefits. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and will require regular evening and weekend scheduling. Weekly travel and some overnight travel is required. This position requires the successful candidate report to the appropriate SWC Regional Office or other assigned locations within the SWC Region regularly.

This position has been designated as essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM. Minimum Education: Doctorate

Skills Required: The successful candidate must be an Osteopathic or Allopathic Physician with a valid medical license for West Virginia or the ability to successfully obtain. The candidate will also have administrative or demonstrated leadership experience for this full-time position. A valid driver’s license is required for weekly regional travel.

Duties and Responsibilities: SWC Regional Assistant Dean is expected to perform the following tasks in their region: Represent WVSOM within the region, advocate for WVSOM and WVSOM’s curriculum, and represent the school’s position on various issues. Serve as the liaison between WVSOM and clinical faculty, clinical departments, hospital and clinic administration. Develop strong hospital and ambulatory rotations, including training sites for required rotations (such as internal medicine), and electives. Primary approval of all student schedules following WVSOM curriculum, policies and procedures. Develop strong clinical teaching sites for years 3 and 4 students and collaborate with WVSOM’s Office of Postgraduate Education to develop strong clinical teaching sites for interns and residents. Develop and direct various didactic programs including clinical case conferences, journal club, small group discussions, and professional development seminars and lectures. Assist and advise students as needed regarding matters such as academic performance, professionalism, personal issues, career plans, etc. Be a mentor for students. Maintains and processes records documenting these interactions. Monitor clinical faculty teaching skills. Recruit new clinical faculty and clinical training locations. Educate clinical faculty about WVSOM and the SWC program and its mission, goals, objectives, and policies and procedures. Review evaluations of faculty and programs, and (in collaboration with the SWC Regional Director) develop and implement an appropriate plan of action in response to any deficiencies. Assist the WVSOM Director of Faculty Development in arranging faculty development programs in the SWC region and provide teaching faculty with information on clinical education teaching. Supervises the SWC Regional Director who also supervises the SWC Administrative Assistant in the specific region. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the State’s policies, institutional guidelines, and applicable laws. Ensures that all employees are motivated and guided to contribute fully to the realization of WVSOM’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives. Develop and oversee budgetary function for the region. Attend to other related duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Predoctoral Clinical Education or the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of WVSOM.
