As the Station Manager at Orpheus Island Research Station (OIRS), you’ll play a pivotal role in supporting world‑class research and education in one of the most unique marine environments on the planet.

- Lead the day‑to‑day operations of a nationally significant research station.
- Ensure facilities, logistics, and infrastructure are safe, functional, and ready to support cutting‑edge research and immersive teaching experiences.
- Build strong relationships with researchers, students, industry partners, suppliers, and authorities.
- Champion a positive safety culture and ensure compliance with WHS and environmental standards.
- Drive increased utilisation of the station through proactive engagement and high‑quality service delivery.
- Contribute to the strategic direction of OIRS and help shape the future of tropical marine research.
What you’ll bring
We’re looking for someone with:
- Qualifications and experience aligned to HEWL 8, as outlined in the Enterprise Agreement.
- Significant experience managing or operating a remote research facility or similar environment.
- Strong understanding of WHS legislation and the ability to embed safe practices.
- High‑level problem‑solving, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship‑building capabilities.
- Proven leadership experience, including coaching and developing staff.
- The ability to manage competing priorities in a complex operational setting.
Role requirements
This is a unique role with unique requirements. You will need to:
- Live and work remotely on Orpheus Island as part of a 4 weeks onsite and 2 weeks offsite or 2 weeks onsite and 1 week offsite rotational roster.
- Undertake physical duties in hot conditions and perform repetitive manual tasks.
- Hold (or be willing to obtain): Senior First Aid, Remote Area First Aid, CPR and Oxygen Provider certification; Coxswain’s certification; Divemaster qualification; Certificate IV in WHS (desirable)
