Position Summary
The Steam System Mechanic is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of steam and hot water boiler systems across campus facilities. This role ensures safe and efficient performance of boiler systems, oversees annual safety device testing and certifications, and supports mission-critical operations through technical expertise and collaborative teamwork. The Steam Systems Mechanic must understand the fundamentals of combustion controls and demonstrate experience in diagnosing and resolving issues with gas and oil-fired boiler systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, and repair steam and hot water boiler systems including burners, pumps, valves, controls, and associated piping infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot and repair combustion control systems for gas-fired boilers, including flame safeguard systems, fuel-air ratio controls, and burner management systems.
- Conduct and document annual safety device testing and certifications in accordance with regulatory and manufacturer standards.
- Monitor system performance and respond to alarms or faults using building automation systems and control interfaces.
- Collaborate with other trades and departments to support integrated HVAC and utility systems, including chilled water and energy management systems.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and certifications using CMMS or other digital platforms.
- Support capital projects and retrofits by providing technical input on boiler system impacts and integration.
- Participate in on-call rotations and respond to emergency situations to restore boiler operations and ensure safety.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum 4 years of experience in steam and hot water boiler operations, maintenance, and controls.
- An associate degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Systems/Maintenance, Electrical/Industrial Controls, or an Electrical program is preferred.
- Completion of a recognized boiler technician training program preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with combustion controls with in-depth knowledge of combustion boilers, combustion boiler control schemes and interlocks, electronic equipment, or industrial controls and automation preferred.
- Experience working in institutional, industrial, or utility environments preferred.
Certifications
- Valid Boiler Operator License preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSAs)
Technical Proficiency
- Deep understanding of steam and hot water boiler systems, combustion controls, and safety devices.
- Skilled in interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.

- Knowledge of ASME codes, NFPA standards, and EPA regulations.
- Commitment to safe work practices and regulatory compliance.

- Ability to diagnose complex boilers and control issues and implement effective solutions.

- Proficient in using digital control systems, CMMS platforms, and diagnostic tools.
- Familiarity with PLCs, VFDs, and automated control systems.

- Self-starter with initiative and accountability.
- Ability to mentor junior staff and contribute to team development.

- Organized and efficient in documentation and reporting.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and varying environmental conditions.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and climb ladders for extended periods.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
Compensation and Benefits
- OT Pay: 0-10 Hours OT/Week is expected. May exceed 10 Hours/Week under extraordinary conditions.

Work Schedule
7:00AM - 4:00 Monday-Friday plus OT as required. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, including on-call. This position may require overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as operational needs dictate. (Subject to change to meet the needs of the University.)
