Job Description

The Office of Institutional Research and Analytics (OIRA), part of the Office of the Provost, supports Harvard’s leadership by providing institutional data analysis and reporting. OIRA serves as a trusted resource for implementing best practices in data synthesis and translation and supports a broad set of university functions, works closely with partners across Harvard. Job-Specific Responsibilities:

We are seeking applicants for our Strategic Analytics Fellow to be a key contributor and collaborate with other OIRA team members to help realize the Office’s goals of presenting important institutional data to diverse audiences and executing research projects that address strategic questions for the University. Under the direction of the Senior Research Analyst, the Fellow will work with internal Harvard clients on analytics consulting projects, ranging from student enrollment management and graduate outcomes to University-wide surveys and faculty trends.

The ideal candidate will have experience with, or an eagerness to learn more about, multiple steps in the data lifecycle, including acquisition, cleaning, processing, analysis, and visualization. Knowledge of basic statistical methods is also desirable, as well as comfort working with quantitative and/or qualitative data. An interest in higher education and the organizational structure of universities is a must.

We will consider applicants from all academic backgrounds and schools, and we encourage recent Harvard College and graduate/professional school graduates to apply.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with team members to produce descriptive and inferential analyses using data from a variety of sources and statistical software.
  • Work with team members to collect and refine data from personnel across the University.
  • Assist with creating deliverables such as slide decks, interactive files, or dashboards.
  • Assist with ensuring thorough project documentation and metadata are maintained.
  • Assist with OIRA events, training and outreach as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications to be considered for this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with quantitative or qualitative data, either through coursework or on the job.
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language or statistical software package (preferably R) and a strong interest in learning R.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively on a team.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting, or strong interest in learning more about higher education.
  • Excellent analytical skills and some knowledge of statistics, either through coursework or job-based experiences.
  • Strong quantitative skills. Excellent writing abilities and able to communicate effectively with collaborators and clients within the University community.
  • Ability to use utmost discretion while working with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to manage diverse and changing priorities and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
