Position Summary

Columbia Technology Ventures (CTV) is the technology transfer office for Columbia University and a central location for many of the technology development initiatives, entrepreneurial activities, external industry collaborations, and commercially-oriented multidisciplinary technology innovations across the university. CTV's core mission is to facilitate the transfer of inventions from academic research labs to the market for the benefit of society on a local, national, and global basis. Each year, CTV manages more than 350 invention disclosures, 100 license deals, and 20 new IP-backed start-ups, involving over 750 inventors across Columbia's campuses. CTV currently has over 1,200 patent assets available for licensing across research fields such as bio, IT, clean tech, devices, big data, nanotechnology, materials science, and more.

Over the years, CTV has been involved with launching well over 200 companies based on Columbia's technologies, and has also founded several technology initiatives to accelerate the path to market for promising technologies, including the PowerBridgeNY (PBNY) clean energy proof-of-concept center, the NYC Media Lab, the Columbia-Coulter Translational Research Partnership, Life Science Venture Exchange, and the NYS Cleantech Venture Exchange (CVX).

CTV's efforts are backed by 50+ full time staff and an additional 30+ graduate student interns (CTV Fellows), providing broad support to the Columbia community and other stakeholders. CTV also runs an Executive-in-Residence program, which brings seasoned industry executives, serial entrepreneurs, and investors to campus to support faculty and student entrepreneurial activities.

CTV administers the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) funded Climatetech Expertise Network program (CEN Program), which provides paid mentoring, executive team building, peer group facilitation, investor showcases, and other related services and education programs to eligible climate tech startups in New York. CTV also administers the NYSERDA Climate Justice Fellows Support Program (NCJFS Program), which provides support services to Climate Justice Fellow participants in NYSERDA’s program, including peer group facilitation, mentoring, Skills Labs and a Certificate of Participation from Columbia’s Climate School. Climate Justice Fellows are members of a priority population and work with a host organization for a period of one year. Host organizations include community-based organizations, universities, municipalities, climate tech innovators/start-ups, venture development organizations and clean energy businesses, but must be working to advance climate justice and clean energy priorities for disadvantaged communities. In order to improve service coverage and implement expansion of these programs, CTV plans to hire a Program Management Intern, Climate Initiatives The Program Management Intern, Climate Initiatives Program will report to the Program Director and work with the rest of the Climate Initiatives team.

Responsibilities

A. Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Meet with potential applicants to describe the CEN Program, share application(s) and encourage them to apply, if eligible.
  • Schedule and participate in interviews to assess eligibility and if applicants have the requisite time and capabilities to be a successful addition to the program.
  • Work with the CTV Finance team to establish EIRs, Key Hire candidates, and Startups as vendors for payment.
  • Track recruits and applicant statuses and upload any onboarding paperwork in Airtable and Google Drive.
  • Attend meetings with partners (incubators, accelerators, proof-of-concept center, NYSERDA, etc.)

B. Project Assessment and Management

  • Work with Program Director,Sr. Program Manager, and Program Manager to match startups with appropriate EIRs for approved projects to meet assessed needs.
  • Utilize and update Airtable to track pipeline and project status.
  • Update CTV Finance tracking sheet and Airtable with executed project documents
  • Link invoices and reports to the associated project(s)
  • Monitor project time and end dates to see if an extension is needed
  • Schedule and participate in individual Predictive Index assessments and team discovery sessions.
  • Support project extensions through scheduling extension calls and processing extension documentation, as necessary.
  • Ensure that any awarded teams and entrepreneurs in residence (EIRs), when relevant, report on their progress, including tracking the submission of any required written reports and scheduling of progress reporting meetings. For graduated teams, the candidate will assist with tracking outcomes over time. Candidate will be responsible for managing communications with teams and EIRs, as directed by the Program Director and program managers.
  • Work with program managers to understand what reporting requirements the program needs to provide their funders for both monthly metrics reports, quarterly milestone deliverables, and annual client company metrics collection.
  • Support the preparation of this documentation related to the above, as needed.

C. Relationship Management and Communications

  • Prepare and send the agenda and attend monthly meetings with ecosystem partners.
  • Attend monthly EIR gatherings.
  • Attend relevant local and regional networking events.
  • Create and post content in the Climate Leadership Network (CLN).
  • Schedule meetings as necessary or requested by the Program Director.

D. Other

  • Participate in ongoing stakeholder discovery to determine areas of improvement and make recommendations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Equivalent experience or completed coursework toward a BA or higher in Business, Management, Communications, Marketing, or a relevant field is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Slack is required.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills and ability to be extremely detail-oriented in a high-volume, dynamic environment.
  • The candidate should be a self-starter able to execute upon the CEN and other program plans without significant supervision.
  • Experience within the cleantech and/or social impact sectors is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with AirTable or other database/CRM tools is a plus.
