Job Summary
Peer Educators serve as student leaders who promote health, safety, and well-being across campus. Through peer-led initiatives, they foster a supportive environment that encourages responsible decision-making and healthy lifestyle choices. Peer Educators are trained to facilitate educational workshops, lead outreach events, and provide peer support on topics such as mental health, substance use, sexual health, and stress management. Peer Educators complete a nationally recognized 12-hour training program consisting of eight modules that build foundational skills in peer education, communication, intervention, and leadership. Upon successful completion, students earn certification and resume credentials. The Peer Educator's work is to create a campus presence that links the community with the message that positive decision-making empowers students to make a difference on campus through social and educational initiatives. Health Education is a fundamental part of an overall school health program. It helps youth acquire functional health knowledge, strengthens attitudes and beliefs, and builds skills needed to adopt and maintain healthy behaviors throughout their lives.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate peer-led workshops and presentations on wellness topics.
- Provide outreach and support during campus events and tabling activities.
- Serve as a role model for healthy behaviors and inclusive practices.
- Collaborate with campus departments (e.g., Counseling Center, Residence Life, Health Services).
- Participate in ongoing training, supervision, and team meetings.
- Assist in the development and implementation of health promotion campaigns.
- The Health Educator and the Graduate Assistant will assign all other duties.
- Attend all meetings and training as scheduled.
- Peers will work up to 10 hours per week with the expectation of attending all after-hours and weekend events.
Required Qualifications
- Must be a full-time University of West Georgia undergraduate student in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or higher).
- Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
- Must be a role model for responsible and healthy lifestyle choices and enthusiastic about educating peers on wellness issues.
- Must possess strong verbal skills and the desire to present information to peers.
- Must demonstrate the ability to work with individuals and groups in a leadership capacity.
- Must be able to work up to 10 hours per week, including evenings and weekends.
- The workday spans from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students will be assigned shifts within this timeframe depending on the needs of the office.
- Must maintain a stable internet connection for virtual training and communication.
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License
