Position Overview

The position of Student Group Services Advisor is responsible for supporting student development through advising registered student group leaders at the University of Minnesota. This position will have responsibilities for coordinating assigned Student Group Services initiatives, supervision and serving as a liaison to registered student groups.

Other responsibilities will include ensuring student group compliance with University policies and permits, acting as an advisor and interpreter of policy to student groups and being a liaison to the University and its constituents. The position will report to the Program Manager - Student Group Services. The Student Group Services team serves nearly 1,000 student groups on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Student Group Advising (40%): Interprets policy and practices related to insurance, permits, tax information, University branding and wordmarks, etc. for student groups and programs. Advise and consult with registered student groups on student group registration, policy and procedures, conflict resolution, organizational design and development, event planning and risk management. Enforce student group policies and procedures and assist with the student group registration process. Manage difficult conversations around meeting the needs of multiple constituents keeping the goals of SUA, the University, and the student experience in the forefront of all decisions. Serve as SUA liaison to advisors and registered student groups within assigned student group caseload to build relationships that provide more targeted support.
  • Initiative Management (25%): Provide vision, oversight, and support for the implementation of assigned initiative(s). Create, evaluate, and implement inclusive policies and procedures for the facilitation of assigned initiative(s). Develop and implement engaging officer training that educates all student group officers on policies, resources and services that affect their work on campus. Evaluate existing promotional materials for student groups in areas such as event planning, recruitment, and branding. Work collaboratively with staff in other University departments to develop trainings and resources relevant to student groups associated with that initiative. Assist student employees in planning, forecasting, and monitoring annual funds for the operation of the initiative. Maintain assessment dashboard of assigned initiative(s) and regularly review initiative successes, growth areas and student feedback to create more opportunities for student engagement.
  • Supervision (20%): Supervise and evaluate the student employee(s) who are responsible for assisting with the assigned initiative(s). Train student employee(s) on presentation skills, decision-making, problem-solving, identifying information relevant to all student group officers, and documenting metrics.
  • Student Group Conduct and Compliance (10%): Support the Program Manager – Student Group Services in managing the student group conduct process, involving other University departments as necessary. Assist the annual review of the student group policies, coordinate updated language with University departments. Review and develop compliance resources and experiences for student group officers. Collaborate with University stakeholders to create consistent communication and enforcement of policies and procedures for student groups. Attain knowledge of and remain knowledgeable on information in the field of student development and how it relates to student group policies and processes. Facilitate ongoing conversation amongst student group advisors about student engagement trends, group policy updates, and student needs. Develop best practices and procedures for Student Group Services to assist in student group success.
  • Outreach and Communications (5%): Provide ongoing communication and education to student groups and University stakeholders on policies, recommended practices, and resources. Manage content and resource sharing on Student Group Services web page(s) according to respective initiative(s). Oversee the management of student group records, including working with University Archives to maintain historical records of student groups.
  • General Duties and Responsibilities (5%): Work with colleagues in Student Unions & Activities to offer programs, resources, and services to support an inclusive and diverse University community. Assist in outreach and community-building efforts through presentations, tabling, and workshop facilitation. Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree plus at least four years of related experience is required or Master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience. Knowledge of student development. Experience participating in student groups or student programming. Excellent organizational skills, effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment. Position requires some flexibility in schedule to occasionally work at events outside of regular hours.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with students and student groups in a college/university environment. Knowledge of student group or individual student conduct, event planning and programming. Master’s degree in education, student development, student personnel or related academic areas. Experience working with organization management software or learning management software (CampusGroups or Canvas).

About the Department

Student Unions & Activities (SUA) is a department within the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs at the University of Minnesota. SUA provides a variety of programs and services to the University community that enhance the social, educational, and cultural environment of the University of Minnesota. This includes retail services, facility rental, space for individual and group activities, entertainment and educational programs, oversight of student activities, and involvement with diverse student groups.

SUA operates three facilities: Coffman Memorial Union on the East Bank campus, the St. Paul Student Center, and retail services on the West Bank campus. The department has an annual budget of $16.8 million. SUA is funded by student fees and revenue generated by the department.

The department has a total of 65 fulltime staff, representing all employee groups except faculty, and 250 student employees. SUA provides opportunities for students to enrich and complement their academic experience by integrating student learning outcomes with student employment.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $56,000 - $60,000 annually, depending on education/qualifications/experience. Time Appointment Category: 100% Appointment. Position Type: Faculty and P&A Staff.
