Job Description:
Student Support Assistant provides support for students with disabilities who participate in the InclusiveU program at Syracuse University. The Student Support Assistant plays a central role in promoting an optimal inclusive social and academic higher education experience for their assigned students by assisting them with completing course requirements, participating in campus life, and working in internships.
This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200United.
Education and Experience:
- Associates degree preferred.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Responsibilities:
SCHEDULING/COORDINATION:
- Managing and creating schedules while coordinating with various supports to accommodate students needs.
- Work with advisors and faculty to create and implement accommodations and modifications.
DIRECT SUPPORT AND TEACHING:
- Assist students in learning new skills and responsibilities (i.e. budgeting, time management, etc.) via timely prompting to foster independence.
- Teach students professional and personal development skills in both a classroom and internship/work setting.
- Facilitate an inclusive learning environment for students in the classroom and review coursework as needed.
- Providing support for both the students mental and physical health by accompanying them to appointments if necessary.
COLLABORATE/PROBLEM SOLVE:
- Collaborate with the Taishoff Center staff to assess needs, problem-solve situations that may arise, and assist in building and implementing structures that promote efficient practices.
ADVOCATE:
- Advocate for students as needed throughout the campus community.
- Outreach to various professors and programs to advocate for our students and their opportunities.
- Identify and nurture natural supports to facilitate success.
