JHU Cornerstone Clinic at Helping Up Mission is seeking a Substance Abuse Therapist responsible for providing individual and group counseling for individuals with a substance use disorder. The therapist is also responsible for coordinating counseling activities according to protocol for clients aged 18 and over.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts intake assessment for clients who are referred for substance use treatment.
  • Completes full psychosocial assessment and treatment plan of care for clients who are culturally diverse.
  • Completes Addiction Severity Index (ASI) assessment to evaluate substance use and related issues.
  • Develops person-centered treatment plan and maintains updated plan according to COMAR regulations, JHU policies and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) standards.
  • Adheres to departmental and regulatory documentation standards, and formulates clear descriptions of problems, goals, objectives and interventions that are measurable and time sensitive.
  • Provides direct individual and group counseling to clients with a substance use disorder using multiple treatment modalities including Reinforcement-Based Treatment which is an evidence-based treatment approach that integrates motivational interviewing with structured involvement in work and social activities.
  • Works in a collaborative practice model with a multidisciplinary treatment team for care coordination, transition planning, and ongoing discharge planning.
  • Adheres to timely completion of electronic medical record documentation.
  • Participates in clinical coordination meetings, and clinical supervision as mandated by COMAR, JHU, CARF and the MD Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists
  • Coordinate clients’ engagement in attending events consistent with treatment goals, including clinic appointments, NA/AA/CA meetings, employment appointments and recreational activities.
  • Initiate and maintain contact with clients’ family members and/or significant other.
  • Coordinate access to community resources including job training, recreation, and drug-free social contacts.
  • Monitor caseload’s urine results and make adjustment to client’s treatment plan accordingly.
  • Enter client activity data.
  • Inform appropriate staff member of supplies and equipment needs that relate to client services.
  • Comply with reporting requirements of state and local agencies, and according to Department of Psychiatry, and CARF.
  • Serve as backup for other research and administrative duties.
  • Will complete other duties as assigned by the Director, Clinical Supervisor, and/or Associate Clinical Director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Health or Human Services counseling field.
  • Must be licensed to be certified by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists at least at the LCPC or LCSW-C level.
  • Must maintain credentials throughout employment.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing counseling services to adult population desirable.
  • Knowledge of and ability to gather relevant information to synthesize and summarize information in making judgments regarding client care.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively within a diverse, interdisciplinary team and partnership; interacting effectively with clients, management, Helping Up Mission personnel and stakeholders.
  • Computer experience.
  • Flexible hours required, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments in a hybrid, past-pace clinical environment.

Starting Salary Range: $48,000 - $84,100 Annually ($60,000 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: M-F 8:30-5
