The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at Carnegie Mellon University is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach to solving complex healthcare challenges. Located within CMU's College of Engineering, the department emphasizes the integration of engineering principles with biomedical sciences to address pressing medical and biological issues. The department is characterized by its focus on creating impactful technologies and therapies that improve patient care and advance biomedical innovation globally.

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at Carnegie Mellon University is looking for a Summer Research Intern. The position will involve learning and mastering mammalian cell and tissue culture techniques and establishing a robust tissue culture platform to test and characterize respiratory epithelial responses to environmental allergens. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, optimization, and validation of in vitro models relevant to airway biology, and will work closely with other members of the research team to generate high-quality, reproducible data. The applicant should demonstrate a strong interest in biology and biomedical engineering and be motivated to acquire new technical and conceptual skills. They should have hands-on experience with, or a willingness to learn, sterile technique, cell maintenance, differentiation protocols, and experimental assays for assessing cellular responses such as viability, inflammation, barrier function, and gene or protein expression. The applicant should be highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of maintaining careful experimental records. Excellent communication skills and a commitment to laboratory safety and good research practices are expected.

Qualifications:

  • High School or Equivalent
  • Strong interest in biology and biomedical engineering and be motivated to acquire new technical and conceptual skills
  • They should have hands-on experience with, or a willingness to learn, sterile technique, cell maintenance, differentiation protocols, and experimental assays for assessing cellular responses such as viability, inflammation, barrier function, and gene or protein expression
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of maintaining careful experimental records
  • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to laboratory safety and good research practices are expected.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
