Supervising Mental Health Specialist - IRTS Northern Team
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Supervising Mental Health Specialist – IRTS Northern Team for the Community Based Services within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.
Supervising Mental Health Specialist participates as a member of the management and treatment teams. Ensures the provision of high-quality, comprehensive, person-centered mental health care. Responsible for staff supervision, training, and development.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Supervises staff as assigned.
- Provides direct care services to individuals served.
- Monitors that all documentation is done within prescribed time frames and in accordance with UBHC policy and specific program, funding and billing requirements.
- Interacts with individuals in a professional, respectful, and supportive manner.
- Maintains knowledge of policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates good work habits.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant mental health, social, or human services field plus one (1) year of full-time related experience (part-time and/or per diem experience may be substituted for the full-time equivalent). Equivalent education, experience, and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently.
- Hearing is essential.
- The ability to focus on the task at hand despite numerous interruptions.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and document into an electronic medical record.
- The employee spends much time driving, walking, standing, bending and talking with individuals served in the community and in the NJ State Prisons located throughout the state.
- Occasional transport of individuals served in state vehicles.
- The employee can expect to lift up to 20 pounds.
- The employee spends much time outdoors in all types of weather talking with individuals served in the community in open spaces, individuals' homes, shelters, soup kitchens, and institutions (prisons, jails, hospitals, treatment centers) and places where individuals congregate.
- Subject to unpredictable situations and crises, to include behavioral, medical and psychiatric.
- Occasionally exposed to individuals exhibiting assaultive behaviors.
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment.
Special Conditions:
- May need to use own vehicle for travel throughout the state.
- May transport individuals in University NJ state vehicles.
