Job Description

Lab Supervisors play a critical role in the daily operations of the Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC). This position supports hands-on learning, research, and innovation by ensuring safe, equitable, and effective access to tools, equipment, and technical expertise for the population of Boston University including classes, student clubs, research and personal projects. Reporting to the EPIC Senior Shop Manager, the Lab Supervisor helps manage lab operations, supervise student staff, deliver training, and provide hands-on technical guidance to a diverse user base. The role requires independent judgment, strong operational oversight, and the ability to balance safety, access, and innovation in a dynamic academic environment. A Lab Supervisor trains students in multiple technical aspects of design and manufacturing as used throughout the prototyping process including material selection, machining, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, sheet metal, foundry, welding, wire EDM and various other technologies available for use in EPIC.

Given the educational mission of EPIC, responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing daily operations, safety, and technical functionality of EPIC.
  • Conducting seminars, workshops and programs for students on various aspects of hardware prototyping.
  • Meeting one-on-one with students, faculty, or staff for design and manufacturing reviews.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of equipment and ensuring a safe learning environment.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in a fabrication lab, machine shop, makerspace, or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of shop safety standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with a digital workflow (CAD / CAM / CNC)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing or related technical field.
  • Experience managing academic lab or makerspace operations.
  • Experience developing training programs or instructional materials.
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies in product development and innovation.
