Swine Unit Supervisor
Description of Work:
The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) is a 34,000-acre facility located near Clay Center, NE. The work performed at USMARC supports research that is focused on solving high priority problems for the U.S. beef cattle, sheep, and swine industries.
As a Swine Unit Supervisor, you will:
- Be responsible for care and handling of swine.
- Direct the work of Swine Unit Hands.
- Collect research data.
- Maintain sanitation of facilities.
- Work with research scientists to ensure treatment and experiment protocols are followed.
This position requires some evening and weekend hours. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as an Ag Research Technician II.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalency plus four years of swine production experience; OR
- Associate's degree in an agricultural related field plus two years of swine experience. Additional completed relevant education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Knowledge, skills, and ability to recognize, treat, and care for typical swine ailments associated with swine finishing and breeding operations.
- Knowledge, skills, and ability to utilize low stress animal handling techniques.
Preferred Qualifications:
The following qualifications are preferred but not required:
- Specialized knowledge and skills to provide advanced care and treatment to finishing pigs, gilts, and sows.
- Knowledge and skills to select females for replacements to the herd, ability to detect heat in cycling females and the qualifications to AI those females.
- Ability to select animals for market.
- Ability to complete extensive data collection.
- Pork Quality Assurance and Transport Quality Assurance training.
