Systems Engineer 2, FAS & SEAS
Overview
Maintain and support critical scientific computing infrastructure including astronomy servers, environmental science chambers, astronomy fileservers, and other complex Linux environments to ensure operational continuity and minimize downtime. Provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for specialized research and instructional systems, ensuring timely resolution of incidents and adherence to service level expectations. Oversee the stability, performance, and security of departmental server environments by monitoring systems, performing maintenance, and implementing improvements aligned with best practices. Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and technical staff to understand scientific computing needs and deliver reliable, discipline specific IT solutions. Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for systems, workflows, and procedures to ensure continuity of operations and smooth transitions during staffing changes. Contribute to sustained service quality by proactively identifying risks, mitigating potential disruptions, and ensuring consistent, high quality support across science departments.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist with the build, configuration, and documentation of IT infrastructure.
- Maintain and support IT infrastructure, ensuring adherence to standards and service level objectives.
- Monitor and troubleshoot IT infrastructure.
- Analyze and report on performance metrics.
- Implement and support robust and secure IT solutions.
- Serve as a technical liaison; support and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to development and implementation of best practices
Required Skills and Abilities
- General understanding of computer architecture, operating systems, and data structures.
- General understanding of software engineering best practices.
- Developed analytical, critical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills.
- Developed interpersonal, written, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with systems analysis methods and techniques.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree and two years of experience or equivalent education and experience.
