Job Description:
The IT Systems Engineer plays a vital role in the ITS department, participating in the management of the Universitys storage, virtualization, backup, and disaster recovery environments. This position is a member of the team responsible for the essential computing and data infrastructure across multiple datacenters located in various regions. This position is responsible for upholding a robust, efficient, secure, and well-supportedenvironment that is essential for the Universitys operations. The position demands a blend oftechnical proficiency, strong communication abilities, and a dedication to ongoing learning andinnovative solutions.
Education and Experience:
- 4 years of experience in supporting computing technology or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Experience with enterprise-scaled solutions
- Experience with SAN technologies including fibre channel, multi-pathing and zoning (NetApp OnTap preferred)
- Experience with NAS technologies including multi-pathing, replication, quota management, share management and both NFS and CIFS/SMB filesystems (NetApp OnTap preferred)
- Experience with enterprise storage technologies including snapshots and both synchronous and asynchronous replication (NetApp OnTap preferred)
- Experience with type 1 hypervisors and/or cloud infrastructure technologies
- DevOps or programming experience (preferably Powershell, C#)
- Experience with datacenter network technologies including LACP, load balancing, and SDN
- Experience in performing Root Cause Analysis and coordinating mitigation strategies
- Knowledge of Information Security Best Practices
Responsibilities:
- Sustain and continually improve the Universitys storage infrastructure, including storage clusters and the storage fabric.
- Support the university wide data backup, restoration, and disaster recovery environment integrated within the storage platform.
- Develop and maintain automation and programs to enhance efficiency and provide configuration consistency.
- Create and augment custom reports and monitoring to identify potential issues with environmental stability and sustainability.
- Sustain and continually improve the University virtualization infrastructure, including servers, software, and automation to ensure supportability with a goal to exceed industry standard uptime.
- Develop and disseminate best practices and standards for adoption by the larger University IT community.
- Continually update, secure, review and create daily reports, monitor environments, understand potential issues, and take independent action(s) to prevent interruption.
- Develop and update documentation and procedures across storage, virtualization, backup, and disaster recovery environments.
- Collaborate daily with team members using the infrastructure environment ticket system to promote best practices, address issues, and provide technical guidance and direction to IT staff.
- Independently diagnose and resolve issues, implementing corrective actions such as workarounds and application fixes.
- Reproduce both minor and major issues and collaborate with tiered vendor support teams to promptly identify resolutions or effective workarounds.
