About the Role

The Tax and Financial Accountant role is part of the Financial Control portfolio within Finance and supports the Tax and Treasury Manager across a range of tax-related responsibilities.

These include preparing GST and FBT returns, delivering period-end tax updates, and responding to tax-related queries from staff and students.

In addition, the role is responsible for overseeing the operational activities of the University’s Investment Portfolio. This involves completing administrative documentation, recording transactions in the Finance system, and providing analysis and commentary on portfolio performance.

The Tax and Financial Accountant also play a key role in the preparation of the University’s consolidated financial statements. This includes drafting financial statement notes, analysing and explaining movements, and liaising with external auditors. The position further involves end-to-end responsibility for preparing one or more financial statements for the University’s subsidiaries.

This is a full time, ongoing role at our Hawthorn campus.

About You

To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Experience operating within a large, complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated tax expertise, including a strong technical understanding of GST, FBT and income tax.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of financial reporting and accounting principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to interpret policy requirements, adapt processes, and deliver practical, effective solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships and inspire confidence across a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to contribute to and foster collaborative, high-performing teams.
  • Highly organised with strong personal effectiveness, able to work independently in a fast-paced environment while consistently meeting deadlines without compromising quality or accuracy.
  • Flexible, proactive, and customer-focused, with a positive “can-do” attitude.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Emerging knowledge of AI tools, such as MS Copilot.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and adapt to new systems, including Swinburne’s implementation of Workday Financials and related platforms.
  • Advanced experience with large ERP finance systems, such Workday.

Qualifications

Completion of a degree qualification in a university environment or another similar large corporate with at least five years subsequent experience; or extensive experience in tertiary education; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience.
