Job Description:
The Academic Planning Center (APC) shares responsibility with students for developing educational and career goals. Advisors help students choose a major that is compatible with their personal and professional aspirations. The APC works with students to develop a clear plan to complete their college and liberal education requirements and form a foundation for their undergraduate degree. Advisors assist students as they transition into their major department.
Reporting to the Assistant Provost, the Academic Advisor will:
- Provide academic advisement to lower-division students or undecided majors.
- Handle a caseload or specialized student cohort.
- Maintain accurate advisement records.
- Engage in outreach to high-need students.
- Provide workshops that support major, career and personal development.
- Provide workshops on degree-planning and student platforms.
- Attend Campus Open House and other campus events to represent the APC.
- Select, train and supervise student workers (i.e., Peer Advisors, Mentors, and Work-Study students).
- Work closely with the Sophomore Experience Program, Orientation Office, Transfer Services Office, and Career Planning and Development.
- Liaison with select departments in the School of Arts and Sciences.
- Participate on campus committees as directed.
Advising sessions include but are not limited to: assisting with course selections, discussion for major options, explanation of requirements, planning to degree completion, instruction on use the online tools and student platforms, coaching for time management/study skills, and referral to campus resources.
The Academic Advisor must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and occasional weekend hours.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Master's degree.
- A minimum of three (3) years' experience in academic advising or a related area in higher education.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Proficient in MS Suite.
- Experience with higher education student databases/systems.
- Experience working with a culturally diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience advising transfer students.
- Experience in hiring and supervising student aides.
- Experience with Ellucian Banner, EAB Navigate.
Additional Information:
Salary range: $55,151.00 - $60,000.00 (plus location pay $3,400.00)
