The African and African Diaspora Studies faculty is recognized nationally and internationally for its expertise. Faculty specializations include racial identity, folklore, African religions, gender relations, social movements, racism, foreign relations, public health, international finance and trade in African countries, economics in the Black community, and transnational migration. The department is actively engaged in interdisciplinary work with a number of units on campus including Global Studies, Ethnic Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Religious Studies, Women’s Studies, Childhood and Adolescent Studies, Urban Studies, the Institute of World Affairs, Cultures and Communities, Anthropology, and the Center for 21st Century Studies.

The department is actively engaged with the Milwaukee community. A few of the possible connections the department works with include UWM Library’s award-winning archives, including the March on Milwaukee Civil Rights History Project digital archives; the Wisconsin Community Activism Now project, created by researchers from the UWM Office of Undergraduate Research and faculty in the Cultures and Communities Program; and the American Geographical Society collection. The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies has connections to (as well as student internships in some) local community institutions, such as the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, America’s Black Holocaust Museum, and MKE Film Black Lens.

Job Summary 

The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is seeking to hire one Instructional Staff member with expertise in African diaspora history, cultures and societies to begin August 21, 2024. We welcome strong candidates from Africana Studies, History, and related fields in cultural studies or the humanities. Applicants must have demonstrated potential and interest to excel in teaching and serve the department. MA or Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment.

A successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate courses and community engaged learning courses, work with undergraduate students, and engage in departmental and university service and community engagement. Community engaged learning courses are characterized here as the design and implementation of courses related to the surrounding community, assigning projects that request engagement with community members or agencies, and employing community partners in guest lecturing or partners in course planning. Preferred candidates should have experience or interest in undergraduate student recruitment and building bridges between the department and the community. Expertise in Black United States history/studies and/or Black Literary and Cultural Studies is preferred.

The teaching load will be 3:3. Teaching responsibilities include lower-level survey courses in African American history as well as upper-level seminars. Ability to develop new African Diaspora history courses is also welcome. Candidates are encouraged to articulate their potential contribution to the department with reference to its existing strengths or gaps.

Minimum Qualifications 

MA or PhD by time of appointment (August 2024) in Africana Studies, History, Black Literary and Cultural Studies or related field

Record of excellence in teaching, Commitment to departmental and university service

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience developing courses and /or curricula in African American and/or African diasporic history

Experience developing courses and /or curricula in African American and/or African Cultural and Literary Studies

Experience mentoring students from under-represented groups

Experience with or interest in community engagement and programming including student recruitment, community engaged instruction

Target Salary Range $75,000
