Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Model Lab School Teacher and Student Behavior & Alternative Programs Coordinator will assist the Principal in managing student discipline, investigation of Title IX and other behavioral issues, oversee student detention programs, serve as a mentor to students, effectively communicate with students, parents and employees to resolve concerns, and assist in providing a world-class education program for students as a laboratory school teacher of social studies and/or business. The successful candidate will be willing to support extracurricular opportunities for Model school students and other related functions as required. Must meet physical requirements such as standing for long periods of time, walking sustained periods of time and long distances, occasional running and sprinting, bending, stooping and lifting at least 40 pounds. Must be physically able to restrain a student in accordance with proper training.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree or above with teacher certification

Experience:

Licensure & Certifications: Kentucky certification for teaching with preference given for social studies and business

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful experience as a teacher

Job Duties:

  • 40% - Teacher: • Design and implement innovative and research-based instruction for social studies students or business in a laboratory school environment Teacher • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the location and at the times designated. • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved • Strives to implement, by instruction and action, the Laboratory School philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, school and university policy, and administrative regulation • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for volunteers and substitute teachers • Responsive and available for parent conferences and those conference should be scheduled as soon as possible and/or as needed • Participates in the School’s graduation exercises, include wearing appropriate academic regalia • Demonstrates progress in teaching, scholarship and service in areas related to education and departmental goals. Such productivity could include but is not limited to preparation and dissemination of curriculum materials, action research, published article/research, submission of a grant proposal, or presentation at professional conference - (Essential)
  • 40% - Student Behavior and Alternative Programs • Assumes responsibility for administering all guidelines of alternative/detention programs, working collaboratively with the school community to help implement innovative forms of discipline that promote justice, healing, and learning in ways that are guided by empathy, compassion, transparency and fairness; • Enforces the observation of all applicable university and school policies, rules and safety regulations. • Leads the disciplinary process by discussing violations of norms with students, planning interventions for students and the community and leading restorative efforts; • Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with homeschool and alternative educational programs; in particular online learning and dual credit; • Displays good judgement, time management and an ability to prioritize; • Provides proper supervision of pupils at all times, including student detention; • Mentors students and builds lasting relationships; • Coordinates with the student support team to address student needs and offer leadership when considering the intersection of academic, behavioral, social and emotional supports; • Responds to and works to resolve difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints; • Oversees the timely investigations of and response to alleged violations of sexual misconduct investigations involving students. • Demonstrates visible, active leadership in the daily life of the school, including during the daily routines of arrival, dismissal, lunch, and break times, as well as at major school functions and events such as those that occur beyond the school day; • Serves as a communication link between school and home and communicates frequently with administration, counselors, faculty and parents about students’ experiences; • Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs; • Encourages student enthusiasm for, and sense of community in the school by generating student support for school activities and developing class programs; • Provides proactive and responsive one-on-one group-based student support and provides supervision for detention programs; • Demonstrates openness, active listening, excellent communication skills, integrity, flexibility, firmness with student accountability, a positive attitude, a passion for learning, tactfulness, discretion, and confidentiality; • Serves as a team player with the ability to seek input from multiple sources to inform decision-making; - (Essential)
  • 20% - General • Establishes and supports respectful relationships with faculty and staff; • Embraces the mission, philosophy, and culture of the school; • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence; • Demonstrate alignment with the school’s core purpose, values and strategic priorities; • Attends staff meetings and participates on School and University committees, as appropriate; • Maintains regular attendance; • Follows all University policies, procedures and Institutional Review Board guidelines, and adheres to Model Lab policies and procedures as outline in the Model Laboratory School faculty handbook; • Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration; • Cooperates fully with all investigations conducted by the University and the School as authorized by policy or law. • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent; - (Essential)
