Why Your Role Matters:
The Health & Safety Advisor provides health and safety support to the faculty of Medicine & Health. This position will support the faculty ensuring that processes align with UNSW requirements. The position provides practical solutions to ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation to minimise risks and prevent injuries in the workplace. The position plays a significant role in developing and fostering a positive health and safety culture in line with the faculties 2025 Strategy.
The Health & Safety Advisor works closely with stakeholders across the school, centres, clinical campuses, health and safety committees to support a complex range of research and teaching activities in offices, classrooms, laboratories, workshops, stores and field/off-site locations. This role will work to implement health and safety management systems that supports business operations.
The role of Health & Safety Advisor reports to the Work Health & Safety Coordinator, Medicine and Health and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities:
- Take a leading role in implementing UNSW health and safety management systems and facilitate transition between systems, maintenance of documentation and updating of procedures.
- Provide inductions, training and presentations related to health and safety to staff, students and contractors, as required.
- Provide administrative management and support to users of electronic health and safety systems used within the faculty, and transition to any new relevant systems.
- Assist with regular laboratory and office inspections and follow up on corrective actions.
- Work with stakeholders and relevant staff to ensure that health, safety and environment hazards are identified, reasonably practicable risk management is carried out, and corrective actions are implemented.
- Work with stakeholders across the faculty to support active engagement, high-risk areas and improve safety maturity.
- Assist in the creation of Faculty health and safety protocols and risk assessments, as the need arises.
- Coordinate incident investigations in conjunction with the faculty safety coordinator, supervisors, health and safety representatives and safety committee members.
- Lead and monitor the implementation of UNSW’s Health and Safety policies, procedures and guidelines across the faculty and liaise with relevant staff regarding compliance, solutions and implementation issues.
Skills and Experience:
- Relevant WHS tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
- Comprehensive understanding of the NSW Work Health & Safety Act 2011; NSW Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017.
- Proven background in WHS in a scientific research environment and demonstrated ability to implement WHS legislation, guidelines, and management practices in the workplace.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to consult, communicate and implement WHS projects within all levels of staff across the faculty.
- Strong time management and organisational skills including the ability to establish priorities, work well under pressure to manage and prioritise multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as be effective as part of a team.
