The Research Associate will join our collaborative project on fire management for ecosystem conservation. This position at the University of New South Wales is supported by the NSW Bushfire & Natural Hazards Research Centre. The project will continue empirical research and conceptual development of a framework for ecosystem-based fire management that lends itself to integration with fire management for conservation of individual species.
The project develops fire management case studies for exemplar Threatened Ecological Communities, seeking to engage with local indigenous people. The Research Associate will be instrumental in advancing the understanding to support fire management for conservation at the ecosystem level, working alongside a committed team of professionals from UNSW and partner organisations.
About the role
- Level A - $110k - $117k - plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
- Fixed Term – 12 months
- Full-time (35 hours per week)
The Research Associate reports to Professor David Keith and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Critically review research on the fire ecology and conservation of ecosystems and their component species.
- Engage with indigenous land managers and collaborators to elucidate relationships between fire management for healthy country and fire management for ecosystem conservation
- Participate in field research to test aspects of fire management conceptual frameworks in collaboration with land managers and researchers.
- Manage, curate and analyse ecosystem data to support development and testing of fire management frameworks for ecosystems.
- Collaborate on the development of conceptual frameworks for fire management with a multidisciplinary team of experts from the University of New South Wales and partners, fostering a productive and inclusive research environment.
- Engage in outreach and communication initiatives to promote awareness about fire management for ecosystems among the wider community.
- Disseminate research findings through reputable scientific channels, including peer-reviewed journals, ensuring the broader impact and uptake of the project outcomes.
- Participate in and/or present at conferences, workshops, and other relevant forums to share research findings and foster collaborative relationships within the scientific community.
- Assist with the supervision and mentoring of research students in the project area, contributing to a nurturing academic environment.

About the successful applicant:
(Selection Criteria)
- A PhD in a related discipline (e.g., ecology, conservation biology) and/or relevant field research experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to staying abreast with discipline knowledge and developments.
- Proven ability to conduct high-quality academic research and execute independent research with minimal supervision.
- A strong track record of research in fire ecology is desirable, along with publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build meaningful relationships.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
